...it's been a while, but i've looked at this one often. barkley did have the edge, i think, because duran lost the ealry rounds......but...the knockdown by duran ...which was really what won the points for him...was a display of ultimate power and skill. every move leading up to it perfect...the old man pulled it all back together for that one....and in my heart i was glad he got the decision just for that alone.
The thing is Duran landed the better shots overall. Barkley shaded some rounds by being a bit more busier but a lot of the shots he 'landed' Duran rode or blocked. Duran fought a masterclass in this fight especially in infighting and for me he definately clintched the verdict with the knockdown and strong finish. Really Duran outboxed and outfoxed Barkley... this can also be seen in the fact that Iran finished the bout marked up while Roberto was unmarked.
For me this was Robertos greatest night! ...better even than when he beat Leonard, because this was a 37 year old Duran! ...amazing!.

Duan won a tough fight with a younger, bigger, stronger fighter, who had knocked out Tommy Hearns before, and went on after to beat Hearns again, and capture another title.
Duran controled the inside fighting and held his own on the outside, he landed the more telling blows and had Barkley hurt on a few occassions before dropping him in the last rouind which clinched the decision for him. A great fight and great night for Manos de piedra
cheers M.O.
