Boxing far better than UFC!

Post by ourkid1984 »

I have to admit that I've never been a massive fan of any type of mixed martial arts but recently I've been trying to give UFC a go.

So many people say that it's more entertaining than boxing and the match ups are more competitive so I watched UFC this weekend after I'd finished watching the boxing on sky box office and if UFC is better than boxing I will buy a horse then eat it!

Ok the fights are ok and generally quite competitive until they go onto the floor. Once they go on the floor it is so boring it is unreal. They often spend about 3 minutes rolling around on the floor trying to get each other to submit and although skillfull it might be as a spectator sport it is awful.

Then you get down to the argument whether its more competitive than boxing and I don't think there is no competition, boxing is far more competitive, even world champions fighting journey men fighters are more competitive fights than the crap that was St Pierre vs Koscheck and then look at the undercard 4 of the fights finished in round 1. That seems to happen quite regularly in UFC, if that was to happen in boxing it would be seen as an embarassment.

I watched both events with a mate of mine who for ages had been saying to me that UFC is better than boxing but after watching both and remembering that out of all the fights that were on Sky only 3/4 were classed as entertaining, he admitted that boxing was far better because even relatively poor cards are far better to watch.

I don't view it as a massive threat, boxing has been around for far too long. I am of the opinion that UFC is seen as too barbaric to be as accepted by all demographics but time will tell.

Sick of hearing 'In UFC the best fight the best'. They may well be true, but that's like saying 'All Top Rank boxers face each other'. Boxing can probably learn from MMA but let's not pretend it's perfect.

I wrote on another thread: "Have to disagree about a cage fight selling better than a boxing match, at least in the UK. No MMA fight has had a a tenth of the publicity of the mismatch that was Haye vs Harrison, and I am unaware of any MMA event selling out an arena the size of the MEN, let alone 50k like Hatton vs Lazcano or Calzaghe vs Kessler." I don't think it's big in Britain, but it's in it's infancy. But with size/money comes greed etc and they will have the same problems as boxing.

I do think the strength in depth is far better in boxing, you have MMA fighters who get title shots after less than 10 fights fairly often from what I can tell.

I don't find UFC entertaining at all, but that's another matter and personal taste.

This has been done to death and someone should move it to Other Sports. Both have their merits, both have their failings, but ultimately they're different disciplines. The people who will never appreciate the ground game in UFC as they don't understand the moves the fighters are doing are no different to the people who will never appreciate cute fighters like Pernell Whittaker as they just want to see KOs.

For me I do understand the moves they are trying to do on the ground and although I do appreciate the skills involved it does not take it away from the fact that it is very boring to watch.

Sorry I didn't realise there was an Other sports forum as I only go on this board and current scene.

Different sports, end of subject really. Seems to me it's only exclusively UFC fans who care about which is best because they seem to have a bit of a chip on their shoulder as Johnny Cum Lately fight fans. I enjoy both but I don't look for the same things in either, you can't compare them.
