Hatton vs Khan a money maker? or real folly?

Post by stuart2609 »

I have been seeing on many boxing forums recently, a call to see Ricky Hatton make a comeback fight against Amir khan.

I have some questions about this that I would like to pose to you all.

1: Would this be a good idea for Hatton? given his recent issues, and his horrific defeat to the pac man.
2: is it in reality a step down for Amir Khan.
3: would it even sell out???

My opinion, is that the fight would be a huge mis-match. I would fear for Hattons safety and well-being, and personally would not like to see the fight happen. In fact, I would prefer Hatton to continue promoting rather than getting back into the ring to entertain us all again.

If khan was to fight before taking on the winner of Bradley/Alexander then I cant see any complaints of this being a step down.
Hatton was p4p top ten, 2 weight champ and only lost to 2 of the best around.
But has the time away, heavy defeats and massive weight gain affected him too much? Could he even get to 140 healthly again?
This would sell out Man City or Reebok stadium easily, possibly wembley.
The old Hatton seemed to have more of a bang than Maidina and maybe the style to trouble khan if he can drag him into a war.

I cant see Hatton coming back though.

Didn't Hatton have his license revoked? I don't think there's any chance Hatton comes in in a good enough condition, and don't want to see it. It would sell though, no doubt.

i think hatton deserves this if he wants it...

khan doesn't hit hard enough for this to be that dangerous and if ricky can get fit again i think this would be a great fight for the sport.

he's been looking good over the last 6 weeks fitness-wise so who knows...

A bit like Haye/Harrison it would definitely sell but in the end would be bad for boxing imo as the spectacle wouldn't match the hype. Ricky should just enjoy his retirement he deserves it.

hatton has lost just twice...to the undoubted top 2 p4p in the world.

prior to the pacman fight he was acclaimed as the top at 140.

he is entitled to this fight if he wants it.

Hatton also had calls for retirement following his clear but tough win over Lazcano, and proceeded to make Malignaggi look like a bit of a puncher. He followed that with being knocked out in two, ballooning in weight more than normal and going to rehab for drug abuse and being stripped of his license. No doubt he has the pedigree but the form book isn't looking in his favour.

Of course he's entitled to fight if he wants, I'm just saying I don't think it's a good idea because.

a) It's not like he needs the money

b) I don't think it would be a good fight at this stage.

There comes a time to walk away for every fighter and Ricky has his promoting to concentrate on now.

Lets please lets not compare Hatton to Audley Harrison Audley is a never was, didn't deserve the opportunity.

Okay, Ricky is surely past his prime but I see this more in the JCC vs DLH 1 category.

I wasn't comparing Hatton to Harrison nor was I saying that it would be a Chavez/De La Hoya situation.

I was just saying that, like Harrison Haye, the names involved would have the more casual fans expecting this to be fight of the century and probably sell out the MEN with a dire undercard. Then I don't think the fight would be as fun or as competitive as hoped leaving people going away disappointed. Ultimately I don't think it would help boxing's profile in the UK.

Maybe I'm being too negative but I'd rather see Khan have some sort of homecoming fight in the north west with a half decent undercard.

khan is no mayweather or pacman and will never be in my opinion.
Sure if ricky can regain his health have 3-4 good gym "fights" i could see him coming back at the m e n and destroying khan in front of 55,000.

Khan would destroy him, I personally wouldn't want to see it. Hatton's punch resistance has disappeared and Khan will have the speed to land cleanly at will. No way would I want to see this fight.

Shocking idea.It would sell out ANY stadium in the country but there would be the potential for a mass race riot! The "Khan Army" in "The Hatton Wonderland" would be a nail in the coffin of British Boxing.

You say writing him off but this is a guy who hasnt been training and keeping himself in shape and also apparantly has drug and alchohol problems! On the other hand khan is a very dedicated professional who gets top sparring and is naturally very talented!I think khan would knock him out within 3!
