There are some other guys who were pretty involved with boxing after they retired as boxers.

Floyd Patterson was a trainer, Associate Editor for Boxing Illustrated, and was the Commisioner of the New York
Athletic Commission.

Jack Dempsey was a contributor to Ring Magazine, was a promoter, referee, judge, and a cornerman.

Emile Griffith trained several fighters.

I would say yes.

I wonder how much stock you put into fighting vs. training vs. other boxing careers? Is it all equal or is being a great fighter most important? Otherwise what about guys who were just OK fighters but were great trainers? Promoters? I am not the best boxing historian by any means, but I am sure someone here can think of a c-class fighter who had a decent career but who was a great trainer for a long time?

Yea, I think a good/great trainer needs to understand boxing and needs to understand BOXERS AND they need to be able to transfer that understanding and knowledge to the fighters at the most important times...many great boxers dont have all those abilities/qualities...

Anyone come to mind? I am not saying Freddie Roach belongs in the conversation AT ALL, but I am just using him as an example. That type of fighter. Decent fight career but a long outstanding training career.

I think he is overrated in the Ring. But I don't think anyone has made more of a contribution to the sport than Jack Dempsey. He took the whole thing on his back and made it huge.

Jack Johnson & Joe Louis deserve mention, but the real racial breakthroughs weren't until later.
