Great news for Ricky. Parris is a good ref - many see him as number 1 in the UK (which is debatable, IMO), but the most important thing is that he's British, so will not be afraid of cuts.
That Spanish judge, Maritxalar, is dodgy (this is the guy that got his nose broken from Salem in his SD loss to Mario Veit in Germany), because he was scoring rounds to Jozsef Matolcsi for merely coming forward and actually had him winning the Hinteregger rematch 116-112 (way at odds with the other judges - one of whom was the experienced Ove Ovesen).
New York's Ackerman scored Byrd - Oquendo, which many people see as a robbery, comfortably for Byrd. The most important thing to note is that he seemed to be scoring for Byrd merely coming forward. Remember Ricky does not know a backward step!
The French Alfred Asaro... well, we all know about him from those tragic fights with Nigel Benn and Spencer Oliver. He was refereeing that Matolcsi - Hinteregger rematch on Channel 4 the other night, and to me he still looked dodgy - just the way he stands and his funny pouted expression, he just doesn't cut me as a dominant figure in there. Thank goodness he's outside the ropes in this potentially rough fight in a cauldron arena.
Any protests from Tsyzu camp?

That's what I thought. Besides, if Ricky trys to get naughty on the inside (as it were), Tsyzu is going to respond in kind. Kostya will fight nasty if he has to, he won't worry about moaning to the 3rd man.Lefthookhappy19 wrote:Hatton fought Stewart dirty? He didn't need to, he dropped Stewart in the 1st with a bodyshot then proceeded to break down Stewart with punishment until the stoppage.
Can't see the ref being a factor, apart from maybe letting Hatton carry on with a serious cut. You can argue that Vann was poor, and helped Hatton when he met Magee. But Magee was his own worst enemy there: Regardless of any interruption, Magee should have gone for it. He didn't. Tsyzu will, if he's given the chance.
No problem with Parris reffing this for me.

Yeah he did. Lot's of little things, puching, leaning on the head etc that kind of thing, not terrible stuff but he was doing that a lot and it all adds up. I do remember one point in the fight when Hatton actually spun stewart 360 and then whacked him and the ref didn't even say anything, I'm sorry but that sort of thing is blatantly against the rules and the ref did see it. I'm not saying Hatton is a terribly dirty fighter, but he does what he knows he can get away with which is a lot more than he would in an American ring.Lefthookhappy19 wrote:Hatton fought Stewart dirty?
I strongly disagree with this, even if there's not the least bit of favouritism shown throughout the fight, the ref should be from a neutral country.

james you cannot say what would have happened had Vann not interfered when Ricky was hurt.. all i know is when you are dazed and on jellylegs it doesnt take much to get you down and out.. likewise it doesnt take long for some fighters to clear their head..... thanks to Vann, Magee missed that window of opportunity... whether the outcome of the fight was affected is a moot point.... the point is Vann went out of his way to protect Hatton.. that CANNOT be arguedjamesmcdonnell wrote:I've watched the Hatton v Magee fight since, and in truth I think too much has been made of it. For me, I thought Hatton did what he had to to recover, and Magee didn't press matters enough.

The sight of Mike 'No Joke' Stewart trying to touch Ricky's glove after being roughed up and dropped told me everything I needed to know about that fight.
Just out of interest, did anyone watch Ray Oliviera vs. Vince Philips last night on Channel 5? Oh my, it was dire - both looked like old men, perhaps I would even say shot... and this was 3/4 years before they fought Ricky! An unacclimatised and unfocussed Vince even gave him a tough fight!
Anyway, for being a fight that broke records for compubox punch stats you could hear a pin drop in the arena, which kinda tells you what type of punches we're talking about here.
There was the odd snappy flurry, though.

Chavez isn't boxing anymore... he's on his "Adios" tour. Anyone that pays to see his PPV will witness 12 of the slowest rounds ever faught.
Why would Hatton want to fight Chavez over KT, the undisputed Super Lightweight champion?
As for the ref situation for the KT vs Hatton fight. I don't think the Tszyu camp is pleased with the selection... I expect it to change. Showtime has about 4 or 5 refs they use on thier Saturday night fights. I expect to see one of those come fight night.

American fights generally have American referees, and because the biggest fights are in the States we tend to see guys like Cortez officiating them. Doesn't mean Cortez is a better ref than Dave Parris.Riddick Blowe wrote:parris is a disappointing referee, IMO.
Why couldn't they have got a well known big fight american ref like joe cortez or frank cappucino? this is a bigtime, big interest showtime production airing in america, not the usual SN dross.

He may or may not be better, but Cortez is way, way more proven and experienced at this level.
When was the last 'big 3' title fight Parris ref'd? I'm thinking maybe Clinton's rematch with Johnson..?
Also, wasn't it him who did Calzaghe - Mitchell? Wonder what happens if Tsyzu - Hatton turns out similar to Tsyzu - Hurtado?.....

I agree Cortez has reffed many more big fights, but why does that mean he is a better ref, what is the difference to a ref between different levels of fighters? Surely we are not saying the big occasion would adversely affect an experienced ref like Parris?Manos de Oro wrote:He may or may not be better, but Cortez is way, way more proven and experienced at this level.
I don't care what country the ref calls his home... This is a question work addressing. What makes Parris qualified for this fight? I really think a more nuetral ref needs to be apointed. One with big title fight experince.Manos de Oro wrote:He may or may not be better, but Cortez is way, way more proven and experienced at this level.
