sorry did anyone else notice joe cortez ruining khan-maidana

Post by Bricks »

.......with his constant walking in front of the cameras? And every time the camera switched the geriatric would walk in front again! Unbeleivable that old man cortex after all these years doesnt have any consideration of how to avoid blocking the view of the action for tv viewers or those in attendance. These days (and our own referees in britain are the best in the world) referees know how to stay close and watch without

a) jumping around
b) putting their arse in front of the camera like the early days of ufc.

It is annoying when refs get in the way of the cameras though thankfully seldom happens. Did notice it with Cortez.

joe cortez let the dirty, animalistic brute maidana get away with every dirty double crossing form of skulldugery, maidana did things even duran against buchanan would have thought too dirty and through it all old man cortez was like a man impotent in his own ring. Cortez should have retired after he let a 47 year old duran take unneccesary punishment from joppy back in 1997

My recollection's a little hazy, but I seem to remember him breaking up the action at quite a few odd points in the fight that saw Khan in trouble.

Not that I minded! Went a small way toward making up for the shafting Hatton received from Cortez against Mayweather.

Cortez did not shaft hatton - he did an OK job in that fight - Mayweather was by far and away the better man. Dave Parris shafted Tyszu.

I agree that Mayweather was the better man, in any situation, Hatton would've lost, that's fine, but Cortez was a massive thorn in his side that night.

I'm not implying anything dodgy, it's just his style of refereeing, he seems to feel that in-fighting and the application of pressure close-up is a form of breach requiring immediate intervention.

Cortez did not do an OK job in that fight I any way, shape or form. His officiating was poor. Round six should be shown to all refs as what not to do in a fight.

Cortez should not be allowed to ref i have seen him let boxers take some ridiculous damage before he steps in, seen him out of his depth when the Lorenzo v Soto fight entered the forth round. In the fourth round, Lorenzo was bleeding from his nose, had gone down from a left uppercut and was being dominated. After the knockdown, Lorenzo was trying to grab Soto but Soto continued to land punches, causing Lorenzo to take a knee. Instead of ruling Lorenzo down, Cortez indicated that Soto had hit him while he was down. Replays indicated that Soto threw a punch that just grazed Lorenzo's head. While Soto was sent to a neutral corner, Lorenzo lay bleeding on the canvas with the doctor looking at him. Cortez conferred with Nevada commission executive director Keith Kizer and other commission officials. After several minutes, Cortez called off the fight and Lorenzo was given the victory...anyone remember this i was stood shouting Cortez your a pudendum.

I hear what your saying about the Hatton fight it was funny how his ref style switched when Bhop met Joe Calzaghe he let B hop do what he wanted.

My main complaint is he is too old and a dithering twat...unlike Kenny Bayless best in the biz imo

I haven't watched the fight again yet, but from what i can remember maidana had khan hurt(in the tenth) and cortez stepped in like he was going to stop the fight and then bought khan time and then said fight again for no reason (the break, apart from khan was on his last legs and cortez is payed off) did anyone else notice this??

thats not what i saw on the tv. cortez like u say stepped in half arssed to break it up, but he ended up between khan and maidana yet somehow maidana like the cheating animal he is was allowed to throw huge punches 1 of which landed flush on khan.....cortez did nothing.....so the "break" hurt khan and helped maidana. i dont see how you can say cortez was helping khan..... the only thing cortez got right all night was not stopping it prematurely either way....i could have seen khan being stopped in the 10th in a british ring

According to some sources, Cortez called break 38 times.

Joe Cortez is someone I hate to see referee a fight I want to watch. Maybe he does a good job most of the time, but I see he makes dreadful mistakes in the fights I watch.

Mayweather vs Hatton
Calzaghe vs Hopkins
Soto vs Lorenzo

But then there are worse displays, I suppose, like the referee for Sergio Martinez vs Kermit Cintron, Frank Santore Jr.

Dog almighty there's a name (& a ref's performance to conjure with)!

Not quite up there with the ref here, though (the infamous Juan Martin Coggi -- Eder Gonzalez fight from the 90s):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD91QpMH5no

Though obviously the timekeeper, the commission & everyone else in that case needed shooting, as well as the ref.

I nominate the officiating team from the Kirkland Laing v Patrizio Oliva fight back in 1990.

Cortez should have had his referee's license taken off him after Hatton / Mayweather. He was an absolute disgrace in that fight.

ah yes! Ebu contests in italy in the 1980s and early 90's, the place where as mickey duff put it you needed a knockout to get a draw! The difference with the referees and officials there was that they were more or less genuinely incompetent and corrupt so even if they had seen a british fighter wipe the floor with an italian they would still rule in favour of the italian.
.wheras cortez's skill in the art of poor officiating is more sophisticated his officiating is so bad he actually makes one fighter fight worse! Think about that.......it isnt as easy as it sounds........he let hopkins carry out his first 6 round shutout over calzaghe by allowing hopkins to pull off the masterstroke of grabbing joes left hand on the inside to prevent joes trademark flurries on the inside.....and he stopped ricky hattonn being allowed to fight on the inside versus mayweather

I'm probably in the minority but I prefer this style of refereeing and thought the Khan-Maidana fight was allowed to flow as it should and broken up only when necessary.

I find it really frustrating to watch fighters get tangled together but perhaps that's me speaking as an armchair viewer/non-boxer ?!

I watched Hatton v Mayweather again the other day on Sky Anytime+ (which is AWESOME by the way), and Cortez was even worse than I remembered. I actually found myself shouting "SHUT UP" at the telly. The big occasion gets to his head and he wants to be noticed; not the sign of a good ref.

I watched it the other day as well and I thought the opposite, it was still a bad ref'ing display but wasn't as bad as I thought to start with. He just doesn't like inside fighting, and Hatton does have a mauling sort of style, and that doesn't suit Cortez's game
