1900's boxer

Post by unclejack »

Jack Weday was boxing champion of the US Navy in 1897. He then
went on to box in Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Hawaii. He fought the likes of Jim Tremble, Billy Woods, Billy Gallagher, Frank Purcell, Jack Moffat, Jack Hammond, Phil Green, Jack Ortega, Scaldy Quinn, Jim Hodges, Dummy Rowan, Joe Cotton, Jim Williams, Dave Barry, Phil Kaminski and many many more. I've been doing a lot of research on my Uncle Jack and wonder if there is anyone out there also researching that era. ?? Thanks, martin

Most of the reseacrh that I do is between the years 1895 and 1950, but the biggest percentage of my time is spent on 1895-1920 research.

Thanks for the reply. If that's the case you have probably run across Jack Weday and a lot of the boxers he met. I've been looking at microfilm of the LA Times and Commercial Advertiser - Honolulu for info. I now might start in on the Salt Lake City Tribune where Jack may have been for 1898 and 1899. Can I find any info in the National Police Gazette ?? Have any tips ??

Thanks, martin

I don't recall Weday, but then again I have never been looking for any of his bouts. You might be able to find a little info in the Police Gazette if your uncle ever fought on the East coast, which is mainly what the Police Gazette covered. They occasionally had articles from the west. I have a ton of articles from 1895 thru 1901 of the Police Gazette in a scrapbook I put together a few years ago. I do know several of the fighters that you mentioned. You might want to check the following website as they have several old Utah newspapers online:

I did a search on newspaperarchive.com for Jack Weday and 9 articles came back from the Hawaiian Gazette and Oakland Tribune.

I use the same archive site - newspaperarchive.com- and its worth mentioning that they add new material each week so the articles barry has found may well be added to in the future.

Yeah, I'd recommend the archive to anyone. Rob---I've got quite a bit of stuff together on Harry Scott and I'll send it to you within the next week.

Hi Barry .....as you say its the best available in terms of value for money. The Toronto Star is quite good but the cost is to high. The also have another archive site but never used it so not sure if its any good.

Many thanks for the help with Harry Scott I will be seeing him in a couple of weeks.
