Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward
New movie out in December 'The Fighter' Wahlberg stars as the Irish boxer (I persume) Micky Ward.
What was special about this boxer for a movie to be made??

It's out in December, might be today, in the US and Feb 4th in the UK. Early indications are this is a strong Oscar contender.

Err, he took part in a trilogy of Ali-Frazier proportions.

Good casting, both men from Boston. Really looking forward to seeing this. Who's playing Gatti?

I might be wrong but I think the film ends before the Gatti trilogy.

Awesome film...its mainly about the relationship with his brother and his struggles out of the ring. Christian bale plays his ex trainer brother and is ment to be up for an oscar for his role. This isnt a Rocky type movie just for the record, Wahlberg is a massive boxing fan so he was a perfect fit..the film nerly didnt happen.
Also i would love to see the Gomez movie saw atrailer then heard nothing more....Dude who played lips in shamless plays Gomez hahha

I'm sure it'll turn out to be a great film, but if it stops before Gatti...isn't that a bit like making a film about Pele and "missing out" the bit when he wins the World Cup?

Micky Ward is not atcually Irish, he's American. He is, however, one of 40 million Americans who claim to have Irish origins.mimmy123 wrote:New movie out in December 'The Fighter' Wahlberg stars as the Irish boxer (I persume) Micky Ward.

Has anyone seen the documentary on youtube, about the crack addicts in Boston? Its from years ago, but Ward's brother features in it. Pretty harrowing. :(

yeah high on crack street i thought it was pukka kids should be shown thaty shit in schools
Re: Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward
Yep, 'Irish' was added to Micky Ward's name to sell tickets around Boston. I've read the book and it's a fantastic life story. The Gatti fights are high profile but in my opinion the best Micky Ward fight was against Emmanuel Augustus.reggaereggae wrote:Micky Ward is not atcually Irish, he's American. That wasn't an actual trailer as the film hasn't actually been made afaik.junior pepa seed wrote:

The people who were trying to secure funding for the project put together the 'trailer' to send to potential backers but I'm not sure they succeeded.

Do you remember when they tried to promote 'Irish' Ricky Hatton in the USA?Deno1986 wrote:Yep, 'Irish' was added to Micky Ward's name to sell tickets around Boston. Laughable....Americans have this extreme romaticized view of Ireland. Very Odd.

A lot of Americans have or like to think they have Irish blood in them. They see Ireland as "home" where there are nothing but green fields, shamrock clovers, Guinness and masses of friendly locals. Idiots!
Re: Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward
Think they're Irish because they've eaten a potato.
Re: Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward
Yeah Irish Americans also seem unusually keen on kilts and bagpipes.Deno1986 wrote:Really?reggaereggae wrote:Do you remember when they tried to promote 'Irish' Ricky Hatton in the USA?Deno1986 wrote: Yep, 'Irish' was added to Micky Ward's name to sell tickets around Boston.
