It was quite a close fight from memory - closer than the Benn & Eubank fights for Wharton at least?

Majority decision - but that was a tadge kind on Wharton. I cannot make a case for a draw. It was Reid's best performance of his career. Only time he impressed me.

I used to really like Wharton but also liked Reid. It was a decent fight from memory, just haven't seen it since that night. I should dig out the DVD I guess. One fight I keep meaning to watch is the controversial fight with Smith.

Like I say, I used to liked Reid but I found him a bit of a hot and cold performer and intensely frustrating to watch at times. He seemed to slightly hestitate when throwing the right which made him look like he was being overly cagey. He was in some decent fights, but who hasn't stopped perenial challenger Nardiello? He was making heavy weather of his fight with the Saffer middleweight - Giovani Preterious (?) before finding that huge right hand and again struggled with another middleweight - Cherifi, before having that miserable fight with Malinga where he was supposedly struggling with a chest infection. Then again looking pretty poor against Branco, hesitating and letting the Italian flick and fiddle his way to a 12 round pts win...then puts in what I consider one of his best performances against Calzaghe on a cold night up in Newcastle.

I'll probably get some stick for this but I don't think he beat Ottke - The ref was overly fussy, but a lot of continental refs are (perfect example is the French fella who fussed and faffed the whole Benn/McClellan fight) but Reid mentally gave up in that fight and just seemed disinterested.

Last I heard about him he appeared in that low budget 'Killer Bitch' film, I know there was something in the tabloids a few years back about him making a few adult films on the side and I think he was still an active boxer at the time, don't know how true it is though, I do remember they printed a picture of him with a couple of big breasted birds as well as his WBC belt covering his manhood. :-?

I agree with this, I believe he never fullfilled his potential to be honest, he seemed to throw rounds away too much for my liking, I was at the leisure centre in Widnes for his defence against Cherifi and he was frustrating that night too.

I also agree with your view on the Ottke fight, I had Ottke winning however I believe the refs performance affected Reid that night as he was constantly getting warned for ridiculous things like hitting Ottke

He is one of my favourite fighters of the time though and he grew up not too far from here so he's probably the most local top fighter over the last few decades since Conteh. I've met him a couple of times too and he's a top bloke.

Overated fighter IMO. Would have liked to have seen him battle the other British World champions at the time. Personally, I feel Catley is criminally overlooked when it comes to debates about the best British Super Middles. For me his resume is better than Reids... and whilst I think Reid's resume is fractionally better than Woodhall - I feel Richie would have boxed his ears off ten times out of ten.

He looked classy against Wharton - but in reality that was it really. I think it gets over looked that Joe had food poisioning and busted his hand/s when they fought. Pre the hand Damage Joe was playing with him. Yes, I scored the fight for Reid - BUT..... with the advantages Reid had it shouldn't have even been close! Joe should have rematched him yes, but I have no doubt Joe would have won comfortably in a rematch.

Plus his world title defeats against Malinga and Lacy are almost up with Audley Harrison's pittyful effort in world title fights. And he wasn't much better in a WBU fight vs Branco. I also felt he was very lucky to get the decision against Cherifi. Okay, it was pretty sensational at the time to win out in Italy.... however, Nadiello is amongst the worst world champions I have ever seen and the fact sky LEGITIMATELY (not scoring it as an Italian would) had it level at the time of the KO - says alot really.

The Ottke fight was no robbery - I know James McDonnell has looked into the actual scoring and it does look suspect. However, I do agree with the final scoring if you include the point deduction and don't class the KD. Even with that, the fight was alot closer than people make out - plus Sven was in his mid to late 30's and knew his time was coming to an end.

This would be an ill adviced comeback. Dare I say it, but I think Degale looks tastier than Froch did at the time when Reid fought him - it would be embarrisingly one sided and a backward step from Smith. I think Smith takes Reid now also, but if there is a comeback that might not be such a bad fight.

I read something in Calzaghe's book about the run-up to the fight, he's a bit vague but says someone put glass in his ice cream? Which made me wonder what he was doing eating ice cream as he says he often struggled to make weight and would be on ice cubes before the weigh-in.

Talking of excuses, I read Reid said his prep for the Lacy fight consisted of push-ups at pool side.

Catley did tremendously well for a small fighter, I recently re-watched nearly ALL his fights on DVD and it's clear how small he is, really only a light middle fighting up at super middle but always came to do his best and always put in 100%, shame his chin couldn't match his punch but he got some good wins, some of them away from memory.

His wins over Beyer and Lucas in Germany and Canada are criminally overlooked when we discuss great wins.

Off course he was a Middle, but got a surprised opportunity vs Woodhall - was robbed of a victory and decided more opportunities lied at Super Middle.

Yeah, Reid apparently had no sparring or something for the Lacy fight - so unproffesional and too me showed he was there for the pay day alone. He was quick to get the excuses in which help get him a shot at Froch, which was a pathetic display also.
