Fake. Typical betting fix. Happens a lot in boxing. It is good a Federal boxing commision is discussed. I hope it comes alive, so boxing can be cleaned up.

...i saw that fight on closed tv with rollie swartz....who had picked ali (clay then) to beat liston the first time, and bobby elkus, who was part of the family that managed ezzard charles before...ah..."others" moved in. i think it was at the cincinnati gardens, but i'm not positive.

anyway..the bell rings...bobby is fooling around trying to light a cigar. he drops his lighter...as he bends down to the floor to pick it up the crowd roars and bobby says...."what?!?!?! what?!?!?! " he is now standing up and liston isn't....and bobby...who had sprung for the tickets said...."he quit again...the son of a bitch quit again!" and rollie said, "see...i told you so."

...a most memorable night.....of many memorable fight nights.

Sounds like that turned out to be a rather expensive cigar for your friend, Jaclem! Yet another reason not to smoke.

Was it a tank? I always thought so, but we will never really know. Liston took that secret to the grave with him. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the original rematch had come off as planned in November of 1964. Liston was in tip-top shape for that one. One theory is that when the fight got pushed back to May of '65 Liston couldn't maintain that kind of peak conditioning and just more or less gave up.

It was a fix, although it was pretty funny because every1 was confused, it seemed when Liston flopped himself on the floor that every1 got confused about everything. What happened to Jersey's count? did he forget to send Ali back to his corner? lol. Then some Ring Magazine guy at ringside told Jersey the count is ten. Whilst theres Liston rolling around on the floor pretending to be hurt. He gets up, they start fighting again then the ref says come on lads pack it in, Its over lol

Actually Liston did not take the secret with him, because he said in later years that he never lost a fight he didnt throw.
Ali was good, very good. But Liston was a monster and Alis pitty pat punches would not have hurt Liston. I would have bought it if Ali were to win a point decision. But ko? And twice in a row? Not a chance.

It looked on film like there almost was going to be a riot
when Liston went down and didnt look like he was wanting to come back up.
The crowd looks dumb founded and then started yelling,...Fake,fake,fake,!!!
then some of the audience even came up to the ring apron yelling,
Fix,fix,fix!!!!
BTW Isnt it unuasual that there(apparently)only exists one camera angle of the knock-out?
Liston's back is to the film camera when he goes down.
The fight was in the
Central Maine Youth Center, maybe there wasnt enough room for two different camera men.
