Tyrone Nurse...what now?
Tyrone Nurse...what now?
Id love to see tyrone step up in class now, he has served his apprenticeship with a record of 15-0. With only one opponent with a positive record (who put tyrone down for a count!) 2011 is the year that id like to see tyrone move up in class and challenge for the english title after a couple or three more fights.
potential opponent for the next couple of fights could be...
Peter McDonagh.......followed by........Barry Morrison
Anything in the pipeline tyrone/chris?

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
I have been keeping an eye on his career ever since he posted a clip on here of one of his amateur fights a couple years ago.
Would be great to see him win some titles.

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
He desperately needs a step up in class.
Keeping him at six round level will do nothing for him, especially against journeymen that don't come to win.
I was at the Baz Carey fight a couple of years ago, and have been disappointed in the lack of ambition of his management since.

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
I wouldn't say he 'desperately' needs a step up in class. He is only 20 and has all the time in the world. One vital thing his team are doing right is keeping him active. Nothing worse than a prospect who isn't fighting regularly. Without being too pretentious, Nurse fought a 10 round fight in October so he has strayed past 6 rounds.LeedsLad wrote:He desperately needs a step up in class.

Against an opponent with a 4-11 record.Deno1986 wrote:I wouldn't say he 'desperately' needs a step up in class. He is only 20 and has all the time in the world. Not what I'd call the right fight for him, especially given that he's only fought four times this year.
I rate the kid highly and think he can go places, but 15-0 and only one opponent with a winning record, he was only 11-7..... I know records can be deceiving but he isn't getting any favours by being restricted to these sorts of opponents.
I'm a relatively new follower to boxing.... I like to think my knowledge is decent but I'll readily admit I know more about rugby and cricket..... but I think he ought to look at having words with Steve Wood and Frank Maloney and telling them to buck their ideas up.
Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
All fair points but do you not think Nurse's relatively young age has something to do with your percetion of his slow progress? I'm not sure of what his amateur pedigree is like (maybe someone could fill us in) but he turned pro at an early age and is fighting the journeymen that the majority of light welters/welters feast on to settle into the pro ranks.LeedsLad wrote:Against an opponent with a 4-11 record.Deno1986 wrote:I wouldn't say he 'desperately' needs a step up in class. I agree with Rhino, I think a fight against Peter McDonagh or even Curtis Woodhouse would be a good choice of opponent for sometime in 2011.
Hopefully Tyrone will pop up in this thread to offer his opinion on where he thinks he should be.
Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
I think his progression is fine as has been mentioned in this thread he has been keeping busy which is the main thing he is only 20 so i dont see this as a problem. Most fighters are still amateurs at his age so his experience in the pro ranks will serve him well. Lets see how he gets on next year hopefully slowly increase his level of opposition no rush and put him in a position for title contention.

MacDonaugh and Woodhouse would be very tough matches at the moment for Nurse. Both are a lot stronger physically but less skilled.

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
ive sparred with tyrone a few times hes got a lot of talent theres no rush for him hes only 20 i think they are doing a good job with him keeping him busy speaking to his dad they have offered people the fight but been knocked back i think people will only want to fight tyrone if its for a decent belt or in a eliminator i think if they keep moving him at the right pace doors will open
Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
umm - good question, Rhino.
I think Nurse is one of these ones who it is awkard to manage. I agree I think the level his is fighting out might leave him stale, but at the same time I think he needs to have some more "man strength" before stepping up to the level you are mentioning.
I could envisage an "Esham Pickering vs Jon Jo Irwin" type of scenerio if Nurse stepped it to that level now.
Awkard one to manage.

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
had him matched loads of times wi guys who can fight and they all pulled out last minute nothing to do wi management,,ben lawler when unbeaten pulled out, danny parkinson pulled out and fought mark thompson the same weekend, gavin tait was in last time...pulled out ...offered it ben lawler the day after he won the area title said no...had him matched with jon baguley for 9 weeks after he banged out vinny mitchell ...pulled out 3 days b4 fight....challenge any others to fight fred janes and give a stone,he beat geraint harvey easy the fight after he lost to tyrone...it takes two to make a fightLeedsLad wrote:He desperately needs a step up in class.

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
I speak to your Tyrone quite regularly Chris and I know he's raring to go but you've done the best thing in holding him back. What about Darren Askew next? His record doesn't look too great but he's got ability and is an awkward southpaw. I think he'd give Tyrone a good learning fight like he did Adil Anwar.chris11 wrote:had him matched loads of times wi guys who can fight and they all pulled out last minute nothing to do wi management,,ben lawler when unbeaten pulled out, danny parkinson pulled out and fought mark thompson the same weekend, gavin tait was in last time...pulled out ...offered it ben lawler the day after he won the area title said no...had him matched with jon baguley for 9 weeks after he banged out vinny mitchell ...pulled out 3 days b4 fight....challenge any others to fight fred janes and give a stone,he beat geraint harvey easy the fight after he lost to tyrone...it takes two to make a fightLeedsLad wrote:He desperately needs a step up in class.

fair points about it being the opponents who keep backing out, keeping tyrone busy must be the priority....so what about a bit of foreign opposition, a few eastern european workhorses will give your tyrone a good learning fight, they will have decent records to please joe public, whilst not causing tyrone too many problems, but whilst asking him enough questions to keep things competetive and keep the paying public happy. i dont agreer with people who go on about tyrones age, im sure the lad is rearing to go, if you are good enough then you are old enough...
Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
Baguley would have been a good little scrap.... barring some blind referees he'd have a much better record, and always comes to have a go.chris11 wrote:had him matched loads of times wi guys who can fight and they all pulled out last minute nothing to do wi management,,ben lawler when unbeaten pulled out, danny parkinson pulled out and fought mark thompson the same weekend, gavin tait was in last time...pulled out ...offered it ben lawler the day after he won the area title said no...had him matched with jon baguley for 9 weeks after he banged out vinny mitchell ...pulled out 3 days b4 fight....challenge any others to fight fred janes and give a stone,he beat geraint harvey easy the fight after he lost to tyrone...it takes two to make a fightLeedsLad wrote:He desperately needs a step up in class.

Maybe you'll have to take a risk with him to get his career up and running, I don't know.
Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
Tried Darren Askew a few times, Stephy Bull couple of days after he won a fight for a fight we had a week later and asked for a foreigner with a 50/50 record on xmas show and got the kid we got! Tried several others, I won't mention on here! He's been sparring top pros since he was 15 .... Jason Booth, Munroe, Carl Johannsson, Michael Gomez, Joe Murray, Josh Wale, Amir Khan, Karl Place, John Simpson, Ricky Burns, Gary Sykes, Dale Robinson, Adil Anwar, Stevie Bell, Anthony Crolla, in fact anyone who wants sparring he's available! And thats the reason he's never gone stale cos the sparring over the last 5 years has been better than his fights! And one more thing ..... he's a lightweight! nearly everyone you've mentioned is at least a light-welter and the rest!

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
Ill be honest here , when ive watched him , which has only been maybe 2 or 3 times hes not looked great , not saying hes not good , just that ive seen him in what may have been off nights , but having read about him on here ive been left dissapointed , really lacks power , so will need boxing skills , that he may or may not have , but considering the level of opponent hes fought id have expected someone touted as a good prospect to have done better , maybe its his age and he may grow into some man strength just like amir khan seems to have done , well see .
Ill be watching his progress eagerly

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
if u rated him in the lightweights which is what he is...and understand this ....at least 8 people in the top 25 have turned him down with no consideration at all by there coaches...and a couple have been offered him as an opponent away from home on their shows have turned him down...no consideration again by the coach then u start to understand how hard it is...including barrett 4 the masters...like rhino said....if ure good enough your old enough...this year we will find out a lot more...roll on 2011....

Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
I had a feeling that might be the case, abit like marvin hagler although obviously im not saying he's anywhere near that league.Basically a kid with a lot of raw talent but has no profile whatsover and thus fighting him means very little money and most probably a loss against someone most people havent even heard of.curtis wood wrote:ive sparred with tyrone a few times hes got a lot of talent theres no rush for him hes only 20 i think they are doing a good job with him keeping him busy speaking to his dad they have offered people the fight but been knocked back i think people will only want to fight tyrone if its for a decent belt or in a eliminator i think if they keep moving him at the right pace doors will open
Re: Tyrone Nurse...what now?
last couple fights been on sky,and has a rolling fan base of about 400 fans in huddersfield about 130-170 come to each fight at home which is all that matters cos has been in local papers for years...everyone in huddersfield knows him as he beat everyone in amateurs...when the titles /good fights come massive numbers will turn out...thats all that matters, very few fighters trancend boxing audiences....all you can do is fill your local sports centres....

Not seen Tyrone in action as yet, but heard good things. No need to rush him if he's only 20, hopefully matching him will get easier with more exposure and possibly an English title
