Doncaster puncher Jamie McDonnell now defends his European bantamweight title against Swiss champion Benjamin Pitteloud in Doncaster next month (January 22).
Frank Maloney promotes.
McDonnell was due to defend against mandatory challenger Malik Bouziane on the night but the moody Frenchman stays at home and in comes Pitteloud, a 28-year-old southpaw who picked up his Swiss bantamweight belt with a stoppage of usually durable Bertrand Bossel in his last outing. Pitteloud, 11-1 (5), clearly digs a bit but so does McDonnell, who won the major EBU belt with a superb 10-round stoppage of good Frenchman Jerome Arnould in France earlier this year, having previously wrested British and Commonwealth bantamweight titles.
At 24, McDonnell rates as one of our brightest boxing hopes, big and strong for bantamweight, sharp and improving. He holds a win over the one man to beat Pitteloud, Ukrainian tough guy Mykyta Lukin, who outscored Pitteloud over six rounds in Switzerland in 2008, having earlier lost an eight-rounder to McDonnell at York Hall (points).
This clearly separates the two, and we can expect the champion, roared on by big home support, to wear down Pitteloud on the way to a stoppage win in seven or eight rounds.

Hall against McDonnell would be a cracking fight..... I still feel Napa should be getting a shot at McDonnell though, it was a terrible decision IMO.

Hall and McDonnell are two of the most improved fighters in 2010 and I think both are "European" class.

Former world title challenger Ivan Pozo is in the opposite corner to Jamie McDonnell on January 22 in Doncaster.
Pozo went in with Omar Narvaez in a crack at the WBO flyweight title in Spain in 2008 but was picked off and stopped in seven rounds by the brilliant southpaw Argentine who has yet lose in 10 years as a pro. Pozo officially lost on cuts and enjoyed real success at European level in his flyweight days, twice holding the major European belt before moving up in weight earlier this year. Make no mistake about it, the 31-year-old Spaniard is vastly experienced and a dangerous puncher at 31-6-1 (20), particularly in the early rounds of a fight when he comes out swinging.
Nevertheless, Pozo's record also tells that he runs out of ideas, and that he does not travel well, so we can expect hometowner McDonnell to go in as favourite and to use his boxing skills in the early rounds of the 12-rounder before bringing his own heavy punches into play. Since Narvaez hurt the challenger to the body, expect McDonnell to whip in the body shots, too.

If the fight was to happen within the next 3/4 months....McDonnel without a doubt, but if Hall can keep doing what he's doing for another three or four fights, maybe get an international 10 rounder in there too, that could make things a lot tougher to call.

Both have improved a lot this year! McDonnel has really improved since his controversial fight with Napa, he looked really good defending his European and looks as though his power and gameplan had improved. Hall is a tough lad who likes a tear up I think if McDonnell kept him at range and used his superior boxing he would stop him late, though Jamie's next fight is a toughy against a former world title challenger. I really think McDonnell can have a really good 2011 and potentially challenge for world honours!
