Gary Stretch - The Heavy
Saw the movie recently, it was ok as gangster movies go, Gary looks quite wooden as a actor and he certainly has aged in looks.
apart from the movie how do you think he did as a boxer, my opinion was he was a bit of a runner, not world class and could not live with the likes of Chris eubank. and to be honest he didnt have much of a punch.

Re: Gary Stretch - The Heavy
Stretch was a quality light-middleweight. Very sharp, fit and he also had a lot of grit.
Shame he couldn't/didn't stay at 11st. Could have become a very solid British champion, rather than just the two title fights he had.

Re: Gary Stretch - The Heavy
Stretch was a really good fighter but he jumped up a weight and straight into the Eubank shot, which was pretty senseless.

Re: Gary Stretch - The Heavy
Stretch v Gary Cooper was a good fight for the British title, Cooper gave it a great go.
Re: Gary Stretch - The Heavy
Stretch had a good amateur style he was undefeated, good stamina, fit, had grit as well.
But he wasnt a strong lm to put him in with the comparatively imposing and unorthodox powerhouse eubank was an insane payday and thats all.

Re: Gary Stretch - The Heavy
I thought Stretch was a good light middle,it was a while ago but did'nt he spark Derek Wormold in a title fight.
Not many men stopped him as i recall.

Re: Gary Stretch - The Heavy
Just watched The Heavy I really enjoyed it.
Gary was wooden as fuk though and also has a weird fuking accent.

Re: Gary Stretch - The Heavy
I once watched Stretch fight Winston Wray at York Hall. There were women chasing him into the ring and out of it.
Re: Gary Stretch - The Heavy
At light middleweight domestic level Gary Stretch was a banger and anyone who saw his destruction of Derek Wormald would vouch for that. He was also a very good amatuer.mimmy123 wrote:Saw the movie recently, it was ok as gangster movies go, Gary looks quite wooden as a actor and he certainly has aged in looks.

He should never been in the ring with Chris Eubank who was really a light Heavyweight, wheras Strech could make 154 comfortably, and at that weight he was a very good operator.
Good luck to him. He has made a career for himself after boxing. Something a hell of a lot of world champions actually find harder doing than winning a world title.
