great post. People forget froch isnt exactly some nobody. Such is the twisted nature of this world its actually sky and their boxing team and supporters putting out this crap that no one knows who froch is and no one has seen him fight cos it isnt on sky sports.....well as u say people forget froch is a big name now in american boxing....he has made very good money for a 168 pounder,he has just about cemented a place in british boxing history......and he was on the bbc and itv in arguably his two biggest fights.......the lads magazines cover him maybe not as much as haye but they cover him......recently his training regimin has been the focus of a mma magazine...his girlfriend obviously brings attenton too....he has a clothing line.....froch isnt some hermit.....many of his worlf title fights have been on rerun on primetime for free plus on youtube the next day and ive seen there have been thousands viewing them there at least some of them casual fans who know a fight is on but dont want to pay skyG0mez wrote:Degale would have to fight Paul Smith 15 times to earn what Froch did against Abraham. He was also beamed into the homes of several million American boxing fan's living rooms.
Say what you like about Mick, but the reality is he has a solid, respectful relationship with Ken Hershman / Showtime and that will pay dividends in due course. Sky pay £110k for a fight card ? Showtime pay between 8-15 times that.
Tyson Fury was on the undercard for Pascal vs Hopkins and Mick's hooked him up for sparring with Klitschko under Manny Steward. Barker is due back from injury shortly and Odonnell was on Shobox the other month.
Let's not forget Murray was offered a spot on shobox against Litzau or similar which was organised by Mick, but elected to hang fire for his Euro shot, which was his perogative.
Fact is, nobody knew who calzaghe was for a bloody decade despite being champion - and his rise to public popularity was riding the coat tails of a post-warren Ricky Hatton. Carl won his title 24 months ago and has already headlined American TV with a defence, brought 4 mill in for Pascal on ITV.

What was Carl on after 9 fights?G0mez wrote:Degale would have to fight Paul Smith 15 times to earn what Froch did against Abraham.
Re: Mick Hennessy,Poor promoter?
It suprised me that when Calzaghe left Warren it was said (by FW in his column at the time) that he had been earning around £500k per WBO defence. That includes the likes of Evans Ashira and Tocker Pudwill.
Also, while I have no idea what Degale was on for his last fight, it would surely have been a 6 figure sum, so it seems unlikely that Froch would have got 15 times his purse.
Going back to the opening post of the thread, I think its wrong to say Hennessey is a poor promoter. He has put on some good shows in the past, even if not in the last year. I don't think he is the equal of Warren or one of the big promoters, but then Dwain Chambers is not the equal of Usain Bolt. It doesn't mean he is a poor sprinter.
Froch is a successful world champion, Tyson fury has name recognition, Junior Witter had a career despite stinking the place out everytime he got a chance to make a big break, Jon Thaxton got a European title. I'd say he's done pretty well for some of his fighters. The promotion of Murray will always confuse me though.

Re: Mick Hennessy,Poor promoter?
How much is Froch's best ever pay day? We know he is comfortable but is he getting what his achievements deserve? Lets face it,his career has been as successful as Khan,Haye and possibly Hatton's so is he getting then rewards like them?
As someone else asked, how much did Froch get in his ninth bout? Fair question considering he was a standout World medalist himself. As for O'Donnell been on Shobox,he will live as long in the minds of the American viewing public as the countless Eastern Europeans do ours.Lets see how much good Showtime are to Mick once the Super Six is over.Even if Carl wins(i think Ward) he is 33 and has a good few miles on the clock. There are not too many fighters out there he can "do an Abraham" on,and he will take punishment.

Re: Mick Hennessy,Poor promoter?
I'm pretty sure Carls not going to be short of a penny or 2 either, plus he's not had to sell his boxing soul to earn it by fighting a long succession of Pudwills, Ashiras, Manfredos........bruthead wrote:G0mez: are you seriously bothering to compare the earnings of DeGale, a nine fight novice, with Froch, a two-time world champion?
Hennessy has done well for Froch in the US but Froch is a UK fighter - the UK is his market! Look at the numbers Kessler does in Denmark, or Abraham in Germany, or Bute in Canada. If you're not a star in your own country something is going wrong. Do you really think Showtime will care about Froch if Andre Ward continues his success?
Calzaghe's career was perhaps handled a little tentatively but he was built up slowly but surely against low risk opponents, always making good money, until he cashed out towards the end of the career. He ended up 46-0 and a rich man...hardly bad going.

He never had the option!British T.V arent interested in him fighting the top guys so certainly wouldnt be in him fighting unknowns.Carl has basically had to do everything on Showtimes terms in order to make a good living.Yes,its great for the fans but is it great for Froch in the long run?Dont forget Calzaghe and Hatton also had defining fights scattered amongst the WBU/WBO "gimmes".Its beyond me how people can say Froch is well promoted.Maybe he would not have crossed over with anyone, though. He was live on the BBC from late in his amateur career through his early pro career then over to Sky for some domestic success and then ITV for world honours! Its not like he has not had a chance.Chambers2 wrote:I'm pretty sure Carls not going to be short of a penny or 2 either, plus he's not had to sell his boxing soul to earn it by fighting a long succession of Pudwills, Ashiras, Manfredos........bruthead wrote:G0mez: are you seriously bothering to compare the earnings of DeGale, a nine fight novice, with Froch, a two-time world champion?

You may think I'm being naive, but I don't think Carl would've been happy with a Calzaghe type career fighting bums in Nottingham, even if the option was there. Carl's always said he wants to fight the best, whether this approach is good for Carl in the long run or not (financially and physically) is difficult to say, but when Carl hangs them up he'll be able to hold his head up high knowing that he give his career everything and regularly pitted himself against the best...... Calzaghe and Hatton can't claim that.mickey1975 wrote:He never had the option!British T.V arent interested in him fighting the top guys so certainly wouldnt be in him fighting unknowns.Carl has basically had to do everything on Showtimes terms in order to make a good living.Yes,its great for the fans but is it great for Froch in the long run?Dont forget Calzaghe and Hatton also had defining fights scattered amongst the WBU/WBO "gimmes".Its beyond me how people can say Froch is well promoted.Maybe he would not have crossed over with anyone, though.

Carl could have done with better exposure since the Super 6 tournie started, but as I've said in previous posts Mick and Carl have been royally fcuked over by TV companies. If a boxers career is soley judged on how much money he earns then may then I suppose Carl should have taken the modern day approach to boxer/promoter relationship and moved to Warren and had a court case or 3 with Mick, but he gets more respect from me for showing the rare quality of loyalty
Re: Mick Hennessy,Poor promoter?
id love to see froch beat glen johnson and ward to get the runs and pull out and old man calzaghe be given the chance to fight froch for the super 6 crown! lol

Hatton can claim he pitted himself agaist the two top pound for pound champs for years and Calzaghe can claim he boxed, and beat,a better version of Kessler than Carl fought!Chambers2 wrote:You may think I'm being naive, but I don't think Carl would've been happy with a Calzaghe type career fighting bums in Nottingham, even if the option was there. Mick is doing ok, although without a tv deal at present (but watch out for sky to pounce early in the new year ...froch on ppv) he has ticked over nicely with the super6 competition, micks bank manager is more than happy, as is froch's....
Re: Mick Hennessy,Poor promoter?
It's unlikely anyone is on what's Degale is probably on now. Given his gold medal bargaining ability. The press love an Olympic gold medal and fair play to degale for earning one for himself - and a subsequent, lucrative career.lefthook82 wrote:What was Carl on after 9 fights?G0mez wrote:Degale would have to fight Paul Smith 15 times to earn what Froch did against Abraham.
Fact is though, he is an anomaly just like Audley was. Let's look at what Calzaghe or even Frankie Gavin are on in their 9th fight?
Warren pays over the odds on the way up and under the odds at the top. The proof is in the pudding when you look at the career moves of Naz, Hatton, Calzaghe and now Khan. It is not that Warren cant deliver any fight that is up for grabs, its the fact he has a well earned Bentley to tax and insure. But often fighters (and especially their fathers, brothers or whatever) see the pound signs and suddenly forget all that's been done for them and flee for a rival promoter with promises of more loot.
Golden Girl are a typical example. They fleece every stable of their fighers - their input into nurturing and backing emerging talent has been none existent over the years. They are a cuckoo.
I know Carl earned the same for Taylor as Hatton did for Tszyu. But to give Frank his due he entices opponents onto these shores with bumper packages - often at his own and his fighter's expense. He perhaps thinks it's better to earn a chunk less but remain unbeaten if it's a razor close fight.
I'd imagine Warren is onto a bit of a loss with Degale but will hopefully be back in the black when the bigger gates happen and the PPV kicks in for his title attempt onwards. Not many are a cash rich as Frank are, who can put down that capital/investment in a young, famous and talented (but unproven) emerging fighter.
Every promoter has their route to market. Earn less up front but if your good enough, will have a bigger share of the big occasion - or get rich quick, but perhaps a little paypack when your on top.
It's not hard to work out folks. One is a job in the 'entertainment business' and the other is to throw the dice and possibly win big.
Back to Mick though, he is passionate about his fighters. And for all his faults his fighters know he is a straight up bloke. You can tell that if you ever speak to him, or hear him interviewed. He is a caring chap and plays everything with a straight bat. He attends all the WBC conferences - and if you fancy taking the WBC route with American TV behind you, then there is no better promoter in the UK to be with.
All promoters work hard, from the small halls to the big boys. We should be greatful they are still striving on despite the poor coverage in the national press and terrestial channels that boxing gets today. Instead of giving them a beating at every opportunity.
Success is not measured by Sky coverage - it's legit belts, legit opponents and a fat bank balance.

How do you know his bank balance is that fat though?!Ive seen interviews where froch has basically said its his property portfolio which has secured him financially not his purses! You also have the whole pullava of when hennessy apparantly agreed with kalle sauerland for kessler to fight in the uk but didnt bother getting it down in writing which you could clearly see annoyed froch! In all honesty you tell me of any fighter that Mick has made into a big star?!Seriously!Witter sold about 20 tickets, murray is still fighting in leisure centres, barker brings a small fanbase with him, etc.None of these guys are big names!Seriously if John Murray had of signed with allegedly you can almost guarantee he'd be a pretty big name by now!Just look at hatton whose style is not that disimilar to murrays and how much money he made and tickets he was selling even before he fought a top level fighter! Both of them mancunians aswell.G0mez wrote:It's unlikely anyone is on what's Degale is probably on now. Re: Mick Hennessy,Poor promoter?
Its largely Fwank Warren's shit match-making in the past 10 years that has reduced TV stations' interest in televising pro boxing
Re: Mick Hennessy,Poor promoter?
bingo! Thats the exact thing the " froch should be on sky, froch should be with warren " brigade forget or show their ignorance in............boxings loss of profile with mainstream fans in the uk started the day warren took hamed, benn, and others to sky in the mid 1990s. Itv and bbc were seriously pissed.....they decided why build stars if sky will poach them off us always in the end.......liamlion wrote:Its largely Fwank Warren's shit match-making in the past 10 years that has reduced TV stations' interest in televising pro boxing
Boxing has always needed to be on itv or sky to make a mainstream star of a british fighter. Hatton is perhaps the only exception..........eubanks,benn,bruno,khan all
of them made their names on terrestrial before they went to sky. Audley is only a household name as he was on the bbc. Even calzaghe who emerged to become a mainstream star did it when he beat lacey on itv on a primetime saturday night!! And subsequwntly when calzaghe promoted himself on setanta not sky or sky box office he had his two biggest fights and paydays. Same with haye he made his initial name on the bbc as n amateur and early pro and than he made his name on setanta which damn it cost barely a tenner a month!........so it goes back to my point how the hell do people think froch being on sky box office will make him a star as opposed to being what he is now supposedly as we keep getting told here by certain elements, which is being someone no one knows! Its a big lie put out by sky and adam smith and his cronies on the forums. Froch i will repeat has had two primetime fights on itv one of them live on a saturday night which was a real barnburner (pascal) he also had the crowd pleasing come from behind last gasp kayo of a former undisputed middleweight champ in taylor.....i went in to work and people were talking about those wins...if froch wants to make sky box office moneyfair play to him......but if he doesnt sky sports should have some shame and start mentioning his name and fights on all its sports channels including sky sports news.

Why does everyone conveniently forget Froch started his career on The BBC?They even had that ridiculous "Cobra" cartoon strip plugging him on various sports shows. The guy just never caught on.He alienated near enough everyone i know with his personality. His arrogance is easier to take now because he has backed it up,but at the time he just sounded like a knobhead.

The trouble with super confident boxers is that until they back up the talk people tend to mistake the self belief for arrogance and take a dislike to them and I think that's been the case with froch, everyone speaks so highly of him now and rightly so cuz he's doing the business but how many of these people didn't have anytime for him back when he was fighting at British level and constantly telling us all how he'd smash calzaghe to bits
