When I met him, I was a little starstruck I must admit. He stirred up memories of when I was a kid. Good ones for sure.
He attended elementary school in the neighborhood when not filming.
Most child actors from that era (and any era) end up a mess as adults, some don't survive.
Ron Howard is the exception, as a boy, I recall he was a pro before entering grade school.
He grew up in the B&W era of TV, Desilu/Danny Thomas produced "The Andy Griffith" Show.
His parents were solid, raised the kids like other kids, as much as can be possible considering.
The fame never went to his head, but man did he learn how to make movies, huh?
He did the USC Film School thing with George Lucas, etc. But he learned his craft on the set.

Growing up in Burbank, and having an uncle who worked out at Jim Jeffries Burbank barn before WW2, I heard many stories.
I suspect most are true, like the one I heard that took place during a Friday night amateur boxing card at the barn.
Jeff is the ref, but there is commotion on the floor, a fight breaks out.
Jeffries stops the match, steps into the brawl, trys to break it up, ends up leaving a stack of bodies he KOed.
Jeffries climbed back in the ring and ordered the wide-eyed amateurs to resume their battle.

That was kinda how I heard it, and I heard it a couple times from different people???
Jeffries never had security - not even an off-duty cop - for his amateur cards at the Barn. Jeffries was the security. :box: :OhYes:

I was in The Hat not long ago. It is great, but the best, I don't know.
Another long time Pastrami land mark that is possibly better is in Culver City, "Johnny's Pastrami" on Sepulveda.
It's been there for decades, from back when the "Little Rascals" were filmed on the streets of Culver City.
The S.G. Valley has "The Hat", West L.A. "Johnnie's". I've eaten at both many times including The Hat in Pasadena.
If you match one against the other, I'd have to say the result would be a "draw".
I'll get a photo when I return to Culver to work on Spider Man after the New Year.
Johnnie's is a simple place, kinda like the places in ELA where Frank & Randy know serve the best Mexican dishes.

The Best Deli Sandwiches on the West Coast . . .

The best Reuben Sandwich in Southern Cal. is at Art's Deli in Studio City.
Better than Cantor's or any Deli on this side of the America.
Art's is compared to the best East Coast Deli's.
Monica is going to bring home a photo of Art's Deli sandwiches, and I'll post it.
I will always bow to the experts on this thread when it comes to food, especially Mexican food.
But I'm a Deli lover, and that's where I met my wife. I've been to them on the East and West Coast.
I'm not Jewish and neither is Monica, but I love the Deli food.

Lord Bennie, I wish you and your lady a very special Christmas and Holiday
Just spoke with my long time friend, Jane Tomblin, who is a top production designer in the British film community.
Jane lives in Shenley, a Village of Hertsfordshire. Her father, the late David Tomblin, wrote the Star Wars sequel, "Return of the Jedi".
Jane and I were close twenty years ago, today we just communicate on holidays.
When I read your posts thruout the year, my mind drifts to thoughts of England, and a special time in my life.
I have family there, but would not know them, or even how to contact them. My British friends are like family.
Thanks for all the candid reports on boxing thruout the U.K. on this thread. I truly appreciate it!
Cheers mate! :TU:

More on Food . . .

This is Christmas, and I'm looking at pics of Tamales.
I will say that I had some excellent Tamales yesterday. They may not compare with Juanito's, but our friend Sirjan works as a cook at Art's Deli. Sirjan and his wife Lupe are friends of ours. They moved here from Mexico about ten years ago.
Yesterday, Monica called me to the retaurant to pick up something Lupe had sent with Sirjan. Knowing I like Tamales, Lupe sent a dozen of her home made Tamales (Art's does not serve Tamales). They were wonderful, made my day. I didn't bother to take a pic, but damn they were good. If I post a food pic, it will have to be "THE BEST" of whatever it is, and I can't compete when it comes to Mexican food. But wait until I post a shot of an Art's Sandwich, I can hold my head high and know that it deserves it's pace on this thread. :OhYes:

Merry Xmas again to all my amigos! :TU: :TU: :TU:

How I met Monica . . .

As I mentioned above, I love Deli food and during the time I've lived in Studio City, I've been a regular at Art's Deli.
Unlike our pal, Randy, I don't cook. I also don't think much about food until I'm really hungry, but when I am, I like to eat.

About a year before Monica and I went out, I moved to Studio City, and was within walking distance to anything I needed.
I was working at the CBS Studio Center which was once Republic Pictures, and before that the Mack Sennett Studios when it opened in 1927.
I live about a half block from the Studio's front gate, and can walk to just about any place I need to.
When I was hungry, I was close to quite a few good eating places, but the best is Art's, about two blocks from our condo.
In my refrig I usually had bottled water, beer, and that was about it. When I was hungry, I'd walk over to the studio, visit some friends on some production, and grab a bite since food is served all-day on film sets, good food. However, I'd usually start with breakfast at Art's if I wasn't working. Monica was a waitress at Art's. We'd see each other, say hello, I'd order breakfast and read the L.A. Times while I ate. I didn't talk much to anybody, and usually came in alone.

About four years ago, when I joined the WBHOF, I became friends with referee Gwen Adair.
Gwen lives in nearby Sherman Oaks. One afternoon, I had to discuss a project I was involved with for the WBHOF and invited Gwen to meet me for lunch so we could discuss it. We met at Art's, and our server was Monica. Monica and I had never really had a conversation, but she and Gwen visited briefly. I liked Monica and so did Gwen. We had a great lunch, and I was happy with meeting, service, etc. so I left a $20. tip. A twenty was the smallest bill I had on me and Monica was very good. When Gwen and I stand to leave, Monica notices that I left her $20. She picks up the bill and hands it to me, "That's too much, you are a regular here." I was shocked, didn't know what to say except, "that's OK I want you to have this." She took the bill, got change, and gave me back $10. I was really caught off guard, when does a woman give money back to a man???? I said thank you but insisted she keep the money, I was somewhat uncomfortable.

As we were leaving, Gwen and I commented on the waitress trying to give back part of the tip. "Wow, She's really a special person." I thought so too. After that, Monica and I would visit a little and I would request one of her tables to sit at when I was there. One day, as I was reading a story in the Times sports section, about Olympian Marian Jones and her steroid accusations when Monica stopped at my table and commented on Jones. I looked at her, and out of nowhere said what Gwen had mentioned about Monica, "You are a very special person." Monica smiled, and answered "So are you".

A few months later, we were married. :OhYes:
Monica was in her mid-40's and had never before been married.
I was in my mid-50's and had been married more than once, and had two grown children from my 2nd marriage. I had also lived with numerous women over time, but hadn't been with anybody seriously for a half dozen years.
Monica and I were total opposites, and have little in common. She isn't a boxing fan and is very sensitive about violence. She supports me at boxing functions and thinks the world of my friends she's met, Dan Hanley, Randy & Jeri, Brian Higgins, John Bardelli, and she knows how much I value Frank and the Balatzar family. As long as I don't insist she attend fights with me, she'd behind my boxing activities 100%.

On Jan 2nd, the day of Don Fraser's 84th birthday party, Monica and I will celebrate our third anniversary.
It's taken a lot of adjusting for both of us to get used to each other, but things seems to be working.
I will say this, I think I got the best end of this deal.

I know what you mean, Bennie. Last night, about 9pm, I decided to take a walk and pick up something at a nearby Market.
When I stepped outside in my T-shirt, I decided to go back in and slip on a sweatshirt. :OhYes:

World Series of Boxing . . .

Didn't know there was such a thing. It's being televised on a cable network and it sounds like Sean O'Grady calling from ringside? Today it's the Los Angeles team vs. Memphis, Tenn. The Los Angeles lightweight is actually the National champ of Brazil, from my wife's hometown of Salvador, Bahia. The fight just ended and the Brazilian from L.A. just flattened the American from Tennesee (one of our recent Olympians and the team captain). This Brazilian lightweight is very good, a very young pro. These are all former Olympians from around the world, fighting on professional teams, five 3-min. rounds each.
The Los Angeles Matadors is the L.A. team, and it has boxers from around the world.

Klitschkos give Haye a choice???

“We promise that in 2011 the fight against Haye will come,” said the Klitschko Brothers in a joint statement on BILD. “We want this fight at all costs! He can choose which of us he wants to step into the ring against to lose his world title.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not a believer in David Haye, but he can do boxing a big favor by flattening one of these inept bums.
The K boys say they will fianlly fight Haye, which must seem like a major challenge to an Eastern European bum.
However, if the fight does come to be, it will only be held in Germany where are the cards are stacked in their favor.

Merry Christmas to you too Paulie. For the more Jewish deli type sandwich on rye bread you're better off going to a place Cantor's or Langers. They opened up a Cantors at the Treasure Island Casino, they should be the same. For a California style pastrami sandwich on a roll, you're better off at places like the Hat or Arry's in Montebello. Cantor's and Langers both make Corned beef on rye too. Go to Mario's in Pico Rivera for a pastrami quesadilla. You will never be satisfied with just a pastrami sandwich again.
