00s SFW/LW Quartet - Who was the best?

Post by JC »

Who was the best of the exciting Super Featherweights/Lightweights who peaked in the late 90s early 00s and how would you rank the others?

Joel Casamayor

Corrales is clearly third, & Freitas, plainly fourth. How to place Casamayor & Castillo, though? That's trickier. I guess I'd go...

1. Castillo
2. Casamayor
3. Corrales
4. Freitas

Exactly how I have it :TU:

I think I'm slightly swayed by how well Castillo did against Mayweather

Castillo also defeated Casamayor head-to-head, & was far more convincing in beating Corrales than Corrales was in beating him. You'd safely bet on him to account for Freitas too, IMO. He probably is the best, though room for a case for Casamayor may exist.

I see this the same way. Based on outcomes.

It would be interesting to divorce myself from the outcomes, go back and look at non head to head fights at these guys primes, and rate them that way.

Under those circumstances, the Castillo Cassamayor comparison may be harder to determine. But outcomes are pretty compelling.

Castillo by a significant margin. He edged Casa and beat Corrales twice as far as I am concerned.

Agree with Irene's order. You may as well list Freitas 10th.

So you think Corrales should be given no points for "creative ditching of the mouthpiece"?

Also remember that Castillo should really be 1-1 with Floyd.

He gets credit in that he got the win, but if you placed him in some head-to-head matchups with past greats and successors he can't just spit it out against all of them when he gets in trouble.

Castillo
Casamayor
Corrales
Freitas

Joel gets good points for longevity and his style I think makes for the most difficulties against a wider variety of opposition past and present, but Castillo edges him in that in their primes JLC was the most formidable of the bunch. People call him a poor man's Chavez but he had a bit of a different skillset with a little more boxing ability at range that makes up for some of his inside deficiencies where Chavez was an absolute master of pain.
