Richard Towers.... Any good?
I heard Johnny Nelson on Talk Sport saying that Richard was going to have a big year.
Anyone seeen him fight?

Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
I have seen him fight a few times. Surprisingly fast and mobile for a giant. A little bit sloppy with his technique though. It's hard to judge how good someone is when they are fighting such poor opposition.

How do you think he would fair against Larry or Fury?crusader wrote:I have seen him fight a few times. Surprisingly fast and mobile for a giant. A little bit sloppy with his technique though. It's hard to judge how good someone is when they are fighting such poor opposition.
Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
I'm pretty confident Fury would beat him right now. It would be harder to pick a winner between him and Larry. I think Larry punches harder, but Towers is faster. They both have technical flaws and lack experience, although Larry has been racking up more rounds. It is still hard for me to tell how good Towers really is. Does he have a chin? Can he keep up a high workrate for an entire fight? If I was forced to pick I would go with Larry right now.keithmoonhangover wrote:How do you think he would fair against Larry or Fury?crusader wrote:I have seen him fight a few times. Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
I've seen him live on more than one occasion but I wasn't particularly impressed. He has a lot to learn technically. However, he seems to be in very good shape which is a rarity in the heavyweight division. I'm sure he will gradually improve. I don't expect him to go past domestic level though. I hope he proves me wrong.
Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
I've been very impressed with the BIG lad each time I've seen him, the boy can definitiely BANG!! but may carry his chin abit high (difficult not to when your 6 foot 30). He's an excellent addition to an excellent domestic division, the British HW seen is jam packed full of great match-ups
I'd LOVE to see Towers and Our Larry square off in a British title eliminator in 2011....... somebody make it so!!

He's tall and in shape.

I seen him and Larry having a good ol' chin wag at the Liverpool show a couple of weeks go. I'm not sure if they're mates or were just talking about business.Chambers2 wrote: I'd LOVE to see Towers and Our Larry square off in a British title eliminator in 2011....... somebody make it so!!

we are mates and so wouldn't like to fight him obviously. But if he was up for it and it was for a title, who knows. Lovely guy though

I think 2011 is going to be you year Larry. British title shot by the end of the year? I'd like to see you in the ring with Sexton or Rogan.warmachine wrote:we are mates and so wouldn't like to fight him obviously. But if he was up for it and it was for a title, who knows. ovely guy though

He's a big fecker isn't he, Larry! I remember seeing him standing next to you and thinking 'who's the beast in the white t-shirt?'.warmachine wrote:we are mates and so wouldn't like to fight him obviously. But if he was up for it and it was for a title, who knows. Lovely guy though
Would be a very entertaining fight if it were to happen.
Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
He certainly looks the business- at least he looks very athletic, he's f*cking huge and he's got a good back story as an authentic badass having done quite a bit of bird. Got handed a long stretch for kidnap. Apparently he was a very naughty boy. I'm not particularly into hero worshipping gangsters or anything, but boxing is about fighting after all, so you want your guys to be mean. He comes across as articulate enough and polite, which is more unnerving than the "I'm hard, me" patter that the American thug type boxers come out with. There's some quite good stuff on youtube about him under his old name. He talks about how Ingle put him in the ring with Junior Witter when he got out of jail thinking he was the big hardman, and Junior beat the sh*t out of him giving away about a foot and ten stone.
The fights that are on Youtube, well the geezers he's fighting look like fat little whiteboy eastern Europeans. The sort of thing they've been feeding Price to be honest. Much, much smaller than Towers, podgy. They get KO'd in a round, but you'd expect that to be honest. They also manage to land on Towers, which is worrying. He fights kind of open, pulls his guard too far back after throwing a punch etc. But I like him and I think he's more interesting as a character than most of our heavies. Kind of like how you wished Fury was when you first heard of him: a massive, intimidating, evil dude. I hope he improves.

Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
Kidnap is one thing, kidnapping to all intents and purposes 'a complete wrong un' is a different matter IMO. My understanding is he didn't kidnap a normal member of the public but a criminal involved in dodgy dealings.
He seems intent on turning his life around and that should be commended. I'm always wary of heaping too much praise on people who did something wrong then turned themselves round though. Fair play and all that but people who simply stayed on the right tracks all their life never ever get commended for that which is wrong.
He looks the part but I would back the likes of Dallas and Price to beat him comfortably.

Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
you have a point Yid but once you get in trouble for whateever reason, its very easy to continue on that path because almost everything is shut to u. And you must work harder than everyone else to stay out of trouble. But people who never get in trouble deserve praise I agree.
Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
First of all, Richard wasnt actually involved in kidnapping anybody directly and didnt hurt anyone during the process. He was, though, part of the plan at the collection end, as it were. He was accepted he was wrong, paid the price and worked incredibly hard to get himself on the right track.
As a criminal defence solicitor i have met literally hundreds of people who have become involved in the criminal justice system. You can always tell when someone has put their bad ways behind them and moved on. I have honestly never more convinced by anybody, in this respect, than i am by Richie.
Richie is a tremendously dedicated and positive person and in terms of the way he has COMPLETELY TURNED HIS LIFE AROUND i am absolutely i awe of the guy. From what i have read of Larry and seen in interview he actually really reminds of Rich in terms of his insight and intelligence. ETS is a wonderful thing! I wish you good luck as well mate.
Richie has also got a great deal of natural talent which i think, coupled with his dedication and hunger and the fact that he trains at a top gym, gives him every chance of really achieving something with his career. Rich really listens to the advice that his training team gives him and is an avid student of the game, regularly watching fights on Youtube to learn more.
It's too early to say how far he will go but he has sparred very competitively against both Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora. I'm not saying that he would beat either of those kids right now because he lacks any type of amateur experience and so is playing catch-up in the pro game. But in due course, i think he would stand a chance against any of the current domestic guys. After that, who knows?

Saw recent interview and comes across very well. Very marketable Which helps big time. If the chin can hold up i am sure he will pick up titles in the near future.

I would like to see Towers in a cross city match up with David Howe - Sheffield's other huge novice pro heavyweight.
What are the chances of that match being made any time soon?

Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
Howe was exposed in a round by Dave Ingleby, Terry, so I doubt he would be competitive against Towers. Howe is attempting to rebuild under Dennis Hobson while Towers has signed a deal with the Hattons so a match between the two is unlikely. Towers has some good attributes but his defence is open and he comes in square on. Early days though.TerribleTerry wrote:I would like to see Towers in a cross city match up with David Howe - Sheffield's other huge novice pro heavyweight.

Re: Richard Towers.... Any good?
True Ben - I was reading a lot of hype about Howe before he got taken out quickly by Ingleby - that will have obviously knocked his confidence so he needs to rebuild but the Towers-Howe would be great to settle local bragging rights before the winner moves on to bigger things.Ben Carey wrote:Howe was exposed in a round by Dave Ingleby, Terry, so I doubt he would be competitive against Towers. Given the respective promotional allegiances you have pointed out, however, there is little chance of it coming off any time soon.
Shame, because I like a local derby.

Towers has yet to fight anyone with a hint of ambition where as Price and Dallas have that necessary experience from their am days.
Anyone know what sort of sparring Towers is getting? I know Maloneys lot get good sparring between themselves
