William Abelyan

Former world title challenger William Abelyan suffered a bleed on the brain following his Friday night loss at the Gold Coast hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The former WBO featherweight title contender, now a super-bantam, was winning his bout with Phillip Payne until he was caught and put down by a right in the tenth round. He got up but was knocked down again and then finished off on the ropes.

After behaving strangely in his dressing room Abelyan was taken to Valley Hospital and a CAT scan that revealed a subdural hematoma. He is not in any danger but while his management say they've been advised the injury is not severe the plight of heavyweight Joe Mesi would seem to indicate that Abelyan's career is over.

Mesi suffered a similar injury a year ago and despite presenting evidence that he is not at any increased risk of injury, the Nevada Medical Advisory Board have refused to give him clearance to box. The Nevada State Athletic Commission are expected to follow suit next month.

This is always sad news to hear, let's hope Abelyan heeds the warning and doesn't attempt any type of a return like Mesi is still trying to do.

Best of luck to William in his recovery and future endeavours. I saw him get mullered at ringside against Scott Harrison, and again in Vegas at the DLH - Hop weigh-in, where he looked close to 12st. Surprised to hear he was down at super-bantam, but in retrospect I probably would have agreed that that was his best weight back when he fought Harrison. But then again, most feathers look small next to Scott.

Very cruel to be apparently winning the fight and then something like this happens, similar in a way to Jirov's comeback in the closing rounds versus Mesi (obviously he didn't get the stoppage, but as good as - Mesi was all over the shop).

Do you mean BEN channel Manos? I have seen a couple of fights on there, best wishes and a speedy recovery to Abelyan.

Yeah, Steve, that's the one. It's usually Guilty boxing promotions (same ones who promoted Abelyan's recent fight), and has 'Colonel' Bob doing the commentary. 8)

I think they do other more obscure promotions at times, also.

Yeah i saw a fight on there and it was some really obscure Mexican bout, the type that warrants a small Jim Brady column in Boxing News and you read it having no idea who the fighters are he is writing about. I shall look out for it more if they have Guilty promotions on and the mighty Colonel commentating.

I wish this channel was a little more consistent with the broadcasting schedule (you never can tell what day/time the boxing will be on). Also it would be nice to see a description of the action in the TV guide. Anyone willing to do that here - perhaps we can make it a sticky thread for all the TV boxing.

I second that call for a sticky on all boxing being broadcast in the UK, would be very handy.
