Has Frankie Gavin got the speed and the power needed at top?

Post by lefty »

As alot of people will have seen already im a big fan of frankies and he has a brilliant boxing brain, the thing that concerns me however is he doesnt seem to have exceptional speed or alot of power.Im just thinking that when he eventually steps up to that elite level whilst he's smarter than everyone else will be able to compete with the athletic abilities of the likes of khan,bradley,alexander,etc....he has a better boxing brain i believe but will there speed be too much and if he fought someone like maidana would he be able to keep him off him with the power in his shots?Im genuinely intrigued!

One thing is for certain. He is in a very competitive division if he makes it anywhere near world class.
The USA have some of their biggest hopes operating there.

I have to say that I just don't see Gavin becoming one of the top fighters at either light welter or welter. I agree that he is a very clever fighter with a great boxing brain but for me that just won't take you to the top alone. You need to have other attributes, whether they be power, speed, great defence etc and I'm not sure Gavin has any of these in abundance.

Everyone goes on about Gavin being by far the most talented of the Olympians. I disagree strongly. I think Degale has much more talent and will go a lot further.

This year will tell us a lot about Gavin and I really hope he goes all the way but presumably he will move up to welter to challenge for titles and that division is awash with talent.

I disagree on degale being more talented in terms of pure boxing ability but just like you said and I stated in my original post,to be a really elite fighter you either need to have alot of speed,or alot of power or alot of speed with decent power and thats my concern with frankie.I agree that Degale has the attributes needed to reach the top in terms of speed and decent pop.

Look at how DeGale's career has rocketed along in comparison to the other Olympians. Ok, he got the gold, but Gavin was a favourite for one before the weight debacle.

He seems to have trod water a little of late, he really needs to start mixing with better opposition.

Bags of talent, but hes dedication i think is lacking, he has probs with his weight making, you agree a weight then two days before the fight they move the weight up. unproffessional at this time.

gavin aint the quickest or most powerfull fighter he's quality's are his brain, timing & movement he has the ability to be a worldclass craftsman he should study fighter's like casamayor who are similar to him imo.

I don't think he'll ever mix in world circles, but he has the talent to win a British title at least, possibly European

Not really fair to judge him at this stage. He has not had that many fights as a pro and has plenty of time ahead of him.

I like what I`ve seen so far and assuming that he will only improve with more fights as a pro, he looks in good shape for the future.

Frankie Gavin is improving all the time. He doesn't need the speed and power to be at the top World Title level for another couple of years. He has more than enough for the men he is to face in the next 6 to 9 months. Pretty much constant training and quality sparring will get him very sharp and if he is strong and tough enough to be at world level then he'll be fast enough to live up there. (Some of those with really fast hands don't place a shot; they throw a few hoping that 1 will land, I prefer to see the properly timed and placed shots).

Frankie is an extremely stylish boxer and I don't think we've seen anything close to his true pedigree so far.

His confidence took a dent when he got packed off home from Beijing - but he is back to his old swagger and he has an unshakeable belief in his own abilities.

I would prefer to see him matched tougher in line with his potential if I'm honest, but that's not his fault.

I believe he will capture a title.

Smart, clever fighter.

That will take him a fair way. Nice moves and variety, too.

Frankie is technically superb and has good hand speed. He really can reach world level if he remains focused.

Watching Frankie fight is like watching a priceless piece of art .... with his gloves being his paint brushes, the punches being the paint and his opponent's face being the blank canvas :OhYes:

Frankie, you owe me a drink now! :TU:

secondly he has been matched alot harder then any of the other olympians already, and thirdly if frankie gavin isnt a world champion (wbo, wbc, wba or ibf) by the end of 2012 i will eat my hat.
his the best boxer to come out of england for many many years. please watch this space. :TU:

Ridiculous comment on him having been matched harder than any of the Olympians so far. DeGale has just fought Paul Smith, the British champion who was in line for European and World honours. Before that DeGale fought Dilks who was a very decent level British fighter. Gavin has fought nobody in that league.

I just said he could reach European class, which is a pretty fair opinion. I don't think he's going to be any better than a John Murray, for example. Hardly slagging him off! Good little fighter, but not great....DeGale will go further IMO.

After 92 posts you must be one of his pals so send him our love and best wishes for 2011 :TU:

He's clearly very skilled and at home in the ring. I really think he would benefit from some top class sparring, maybe Arnie should take his gym over to the states for amonth or two and go around some of the gyms. I appreciate this may be unrealistic in money terms, but all would benefit.

He's too early in for us to know his true temperament, desire and heart. Skill wise though, he does appear to havr the ability to go far.

no im not one of his pals, frankie will confirm that, apart from the smith fight degale has fought nobody, please dont call carl dilks british level, his awful, check out frankies opponents one by one and see the toughness his had to deal with, even from his first opponent, gavin was one of the best amateurs in the world and i think adapted to the pros as good as anyone, i believe degale will go along way too but not anywhere near gavins level.
and if you believe how many posts someone has made is a measure of there boxing knowledge than your very stupid. i boxed from 10 to 22 years old and have watched boxing am and pro for over 25 years, as jim mcdonnell says i come from fighting stock, i know a prospect when i see one... happy new year to you too
