I only just heard about this. What an amazing/unprecedented ending. If you don't know this fight, I recommend watching the vid first without looking up the result. I've never seen anything like it.

I had forgotten about that one, thanks for posting the link. I remember how upset I was watching that fight, but now that I see it again, it really wasn't that bad a call by Venti.
Of course, it also reminds me of how much I miss that particular group of ESPN announcers.

This caused quite a stir at the time. I'm pretty sure they had a rematch to sort it out.

Apparently they did agree to a rematch but Meekins pulled out, and Kawoya never fought again.bennie wrote:This caused quite a stir at the time. I'm pretty sure they had a rematch to sort it out.
As for the call, I'm not sure if it was a "good" call, but the ref didn't mess up. He did what he thought was best, and what then occured was once-in-a-lifetime stuff.

It was definitely a very bad stoppage. Kawoya wasn't getting pummelled and he was still fighting back (which is pretty obvious given the ending). He didn't take any big shots after he got back up. I also thought it was funny that the ref was pinning Kawoya to the ropes, as if to protect him after the fight had ended, when it was Meekins who was slumped in the corner.

Like something from the WWF!
Just goes to show how razor thin the error of margin can be.

Funny you should say that - the WWF/E has often worked real-life boxing occurrences into its storylines; kind of an "art imitating life" scenario. I remember in the late 90s they had a "mentally unstable" wrestler deliberately low-blow an opponent in a fight he was winning, with the commentator exclaiming "He hit him in the Golotas!"J-C wrote:Like something from the WWF!
