me, lennox lewis, naz and johnny nelson

Post by Quixall »

The recent post about naz brought back a great memory.......

In may 1990 lennox lewis was scheduled to fight dan murphy in Sheffield at the city hall. I'd heard quite a bit about lennox moving from the amateurs to fight under the British flag as a professional and thought I'd like to meet him. So one Sunday morning in may that year, I ventures down to josephines nightclub in Sheffield for the official weigh in. Lennox was there looking Calm and relaxed as ever and managed to to have enough to to get an autograph and say " good luck for the fight lennox", to which the big man answered " cheers man"

I hung around the club, taking in the atmosphere and ended up charting to Paul "silky" jones, who I'd been at school with and in later years would become a world champion himself. Once lennox decided to leave, I went at the same time and followed him out of the club, with two other people, one who had this big grin printed all over his face and looked about 16 years old. I recognised the young kid, because he had been in the papers a lot and of course it was a young naz, the other person being johnny nelson.

We all walked down this narrow Road that led from the club, out onto the precinct and the four of us walked in a straight line, like something out resevoir dogs, lennox, then johnny, then naz, then me, in blazing sunshine, in the middle if Sheffield, with not a sole about. Lennox was shadow boxing into a department store window, johnny was talking and making gestures, naz was laughing and grinning and I was just strolling, taking in the sun.

Only later did I realize I had been walking with the future undisputed heavyweight champion, the future cruiserweight champion and the future featherweight champion. I often think of that brief moment in time and it always makes me smile.

Nice one.
It's good when you can get that close to the fighters before they blow up big time and become untouchable.
Always makes you more passionate about supporting them aswell when you've met them etc.

BIGMARK wrote:Nice story Quix :TU: I remember meeting Lewis one time in London and got to chat to him for about 10 mins. I was running a restaurant on Millbank in London and we had a private party for The London-Nigerian Rugby Club and for some reason Lewis was the guest on Honour :o Anyway the host of the party was a nice guy and introduced me to Lewis which for Boing fan like me was such a huge honour. Anyway i got to talked to him but kept the conversation to Canada because didnt want to bother him about Boxing and he was a very nice man. During the evening the host got more and more drunk and kept introducing us which was quite embrassing. Of course i should of kick his arse as 2 years early he had meant my wife (now Ex) in a nightclub and asked for her number, he was lucky i was working so had to remain pro
Hi mark, how have you been ?

I later met naz just before his fight with manual calvo. I asked about his back injury which he had a few months previous and he told me he was fine and told me the date for the calvo fight. He looked at me eye to eye and said " as if he was talking to larry merchant LOL. I found it a rather uncomfortable experience and he came across as arrogant and rude.

Heard lots of stories that suggest he was and is a bit of a prick

I went with a few mates to see the bout at City Hall with Lennox and 'Business Man' Murphy. I wasn't that impressed with Lewis but can to this day remember Chris Saunders winning and Mark Ramsey won as well; could he box?! I was very impressed with him. Also after the bout we bumped into Lennox and his trainers etc. I recognised Harold Knight from a bout I'd seen him in (Kenny Baysmore); I was going to say hello but Harold looked like a really mean bloke so I kept myself to myself.

A few of us had a good chat with Michael Gomez before the Hatton/Tsyzu fight in a bar in Manchester.

He was a top chap and had a good laugh with him although he had on the naughtiest "Christmas Jumper" I have ever seen. It was a big woolly blue and red thing that was about 2 sizes too big for him.

Once a Pikey.....
