I'm just saying that some of the new boxers didn't think that they would be in the WSB but couldn't pass on whatever they were given as incentive. Russell's style in a pro-scoring environment is going to be very difficult to beat. At the start, I was thinking that probably Raushee would be the only US boxer that could win and delete a weight class from the trials, but I think there are going to be a lot of US boxers keeping an eye on several weight classes. Raynell has looked good too.T Duquette wrote:I agree DC, Ive also been very impressed by the action in the fights Ive seen. I'm not surprised that Russ is doing well. I worked with him in a training camp and he is a good boxer. In regard to the cut issue, it was one of my worries with the WSB. One reason the corners may not be doing a good job with cuts is that they may be limited in what they can use. The WSB might say like AIBA does that the corners can't use anything other than ice and vaseline (they are allowing more free use of this substance in the WSB). Another issue with cuts is that in the pros, if a boxer is cut the team (manager, trainer and promoter) will put the boxer on hold for at least a month to allow the cut to heal properly. In the WSB, the team may need the boxer to compete again 2-3 weeks later and that is rushing it in regard to a cut. It can be done, but it is better to give it a few more weeks to reduce the risk of reopening the cut. If the corner is allowed to use Adrenaline or other coagulants, they might be able to keep the cuts from opening up as much during the bouts.

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Tonight in the Memphis vs. LA match, some of the results are kind of surprising. Rau'shee Warren won a pts decision over Ronny Beblick. Everton Dos Santos won via TKO over Raynell Williams. Carlos Gongora won a pts decision over Terrell Gausha. Dorian Anthony won a pts decision over Anthony Mack. Lenroy Cam Thompson won a pts decision over Javier Torres.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
I am looking forward to watching these bouts. I just wish we could see some of them live rather than tape delay and knowing the results ahead of time.

On the full results (all judges scores, etc.) that you can download as a pdf they had Kenny Egan on 45 day restriction for his cut. Not sure about Jones but Egan's cut was a bad gash.Dennis wrote: Another issue with cuts is that in the pros, if a boxer is cut the team (manager, trainer and promoter) will put the boxer on hold for at least a month to allow the cut to heal properly. Here's the latest on the "who from WSB can qualify for the Olympics" stuff. Individual rankins are posted on the WSB site.
The WSB now publishes the all-important individual rankings that will ultimately determine the top two boxers in each weight category, who will qualify for the Individual Championships in May 2011, where they will fight for qualification to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Right. The rankings determine who gets to box for the WSB title. The WSB rulebook says that this is going to be the last weekend in May. Top two box for the individual title and Olympic berth.boxmel wrote:Here's the latest on the "who from WSB can qualify for the Olympics" stuff. Individual rankins are posted on the WSB site.

Top 4 teams compete in semis (start first week of April) and will consist of two consecutive evenings (5 boxers compete each night). Same goes for finals scheduled for first week of May.
So the USA Nationals are March 2011, so how are they going to eliminate the weight class of the WSB winner if that is held in May??
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Good question... 8) And it involves 4 weight classes. Sounds like a law suit in the making. So the USA Nationals are March 2011, so how are they going to eliminate the weight class of the WSB winner if that is held in May??
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Allegedly the USA National Championships are being moved to June. No official announcement yet. The reasoning is so the WSB boxers can compete in the tournament.

I doubt that they are gonna move the US Champs to June. The last chance qualifier is supposed to be in June, right before the trials. I am a member of our AAC and we had a meeting yesterday. We were all told that if say Ruashe wins and declares 114, that weight class was going to be eliminated from the trials, and if somebody qualified for a spot in the trials at 114 they were going to be given the opportunity to go either up or down in weight. This obviously meens that the trials will be a little longer. This info came straight from Anthony I believe.

Just trying to give everyone the heads up as early as possible. Don't be surprised with lots of last minute changes in 2011.T Duquette wrote:I doubt that they are gonna move the US Champs to June. The information in the selection process about athletes moving up or down a weight class is a joke. Here is a very unrealistic scenario, but not impossible. What happens if a middleweight wins the WSB and selects 165, a light-heavy wins and selects 178, and a heavyweight selects the 201 class? A boxer who struggles to just make 165 is not going to be able to drop down to 152 and the boxer would have to move up to 201+ in order to compete at the Olympic Trials. Even a 178 boxer moving up to 201+ usually is not realistic. Many 201's can't really move up to 201+. Moving down for others is just as unlikely. Take a 6'6", 270# boxer. If a WSB boxer wins at heavy and declares himself for 201+, the 270# boxer is not going to be able to drop down to 201 pounds especially in a month or so.

Sorry Dennis, looks like you were right. Although I dont understand why AIBA would have any leverage over when we hold our US Championships.
December 20, 2010
Dear USA Boxing Membership-
USA Boxing received word from AIBA that we will be unable to hold the 2011 USA Boxing National Championships, March 20-27, 2011, due to a conflict with the World Series of Boxing schedule, as the new Board of Directors was not aware of AIBA’s request.
We are currently looking at alternative dates and location to hold the event upon the completion of the WSB season on May 28. The current month being considered for the event is June, but no concrete plans have been confirmed at this time...

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Part of the reason USAB is so willing to do whatever AIBA wants is the financial support they are hoping to receive from WSB. USAB will receive a percentage of all U.S. boxer's salaries and bonuses. It may be well over $100,000 the first year and could go much higher in years to come.

It all comes down to money. Even when it doesn't appear to, it all comes down to money. You are absolutely right. That will always drive USAB decisions until the financial situation changes unfortunately.Dennis wrote:Part of the reason USAB is so willing to do whatever AIBA wants is the financial support they are hoping to receive from WSB. Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Hey guys I have a question about wsb.
If the winner gets a spot in the olympics and takes the spot from others what happens if they don't win are they still allowed to box at the US olympic trials?

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
It appears that USAB changed the dates of the USA Nationals at WSB's direction just so the WSB boxers could compete in them. AIBA wants as many WSB boxers as possible to be in the Olympics and have some of them win medals.Bolo wrote:Hey guys I have a question about wsb.

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
I don't like the WSB champs taking the Olympic spot for their National Federation when other boxers won't have a chance to compete for that spot. They should either be an At Large team at the Olympics or they should have to at least defeat their National Federation's top boxer in that weight class via a box-off. Imagine if the #1 in the world Cammarelle is told that he can't go to the Olympics b/c Russo wins the individual WSB title and says that he is going to the Olympics at 91+. Cammarelle is too big to drop down to 91kg. Russo I'm sure would just declare at 91 so Cammarelle can go at 91+, but it is an example of what could happen and how it isn't fair to other boxers. This isn't just an issue for USA boxers.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
I do really like watching the WSB bouts. There are some good things about the WSB. I just think they went about a few things the wrong way.
Another issue - whoever does the website, please correct the errors. You have the Istanbulls boxer Sipal listed twice b/c you have his first name spelled two different ways. Also make the website mobile friendly!!!!
Finally, the individual rankings make no sense. There are boxers who have two wins and no losses ranked higher than other boxers with two wins and no losses but who have more total points. How does that happen?

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
In regard to the TV in the United States. It would be nice if Versus would air bouts on a regular schedule so fans would know that every Thursday and Saturday at 8pm EST they could watch a WSB contest. They jump all around and maybe they have to right now b/c of earlier committments, but in the future I think that would help the WSB succeed. They could have other random times for replays during off peak times, but it is crucial to be a little more consistent with their broadcast times.

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
When the week 6 matches conclude the WSB season will be halfway over. I think it will be fun to start making some predictions then. Get fans to state which 4 teams will be in the playoffs and which team will win the first year's championship. Also predict which 2 boxers will be in the individual championships in each weight class and which boxer will win.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
From Europe It should be Paris and Milan. Nevin should make it at 54, Valentino at 60 and Russo at heavy. Baku and Astana should qualify and Matadors and perhaps Miami. Lamor, Egan and Fowler are fair bets as are Abdulihaminov, Medzihdov to name a few.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
After the sixth round the teams in the semi-final positions are Paris Baku Astana and LA and it would seem the only others in contention are Milan and Mexico.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Memphis is struggling big time. Their new signee Cam Thompson won his first bout, but just lost his second bout. They have some good boxers on the team, but they keep getting matched against better boxers. Hopefully they can turn things around a bit.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
My predictions - it is hard to say with some since I don't get to see any of the European or Asian bouts.
Bantam - Nevin & Warren
Light - Dos Santos & Valentino
Middle - I'll go with Vastine & Lamour. Deravyanchencko & Lima could make it. Lamour's own teammate Gongora could also make it.
Light-heavy - Benchabla & Egan if Egan can compete soon and often the rest of the season. If not, I will go with Kolling.
Heavy - Russo & either Trent Rawlins or Donovan Dennis from the Miami Gallos.
As for the teams it is hard to pick against LA, Baku and Paris winning their conferences based upon the first half of the season. The real competition will be for the wild card spot and it will be between Milano and Astana. It would be great if they had to play into that 4th spot in the team championships so that those two would battle it out.
