Yeah right !!!!!!!!

Post by damianhucker1 »

Just in early stages of planning my next white collar show , ive tonight been offered a former british and commonwealth light welterweight champion for my show , curiously i asked who it was and was told it was a now middleweight Tony Ekubia , now ill be honest i had no idea who he was so i looked him up on boxrec , took a look at his record , saw how long ago his last fight was etc , and thought blimey hes 50 years old , he must need the money , i dipped my toes in the water tentatively , im not currently in the need of a middleweight but if the offers good id be willing to give it a go , i was then told that hed want to pick the opponent , so i therfor couldnt even cover the cost bu putting him in with a ticket seller , i was expecting him to want maybe 300 or 400 quid , so was flabergasted when he said it would cost £2500 , bloody 2 and a half grand for an ex pro who ive never heard of , is 50 years old , i cant choose his opponent and cant try to cover his cost , i can get Former world heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon for about a 3rd of that if not less , so i of course turned him down , politely telling him he needs to reduce the price if he wants to get matched up any time soon , what im now wondering is have i missed a trick , was he a fantastic fighter or something , surely something justifies why he wanted such a fee when theres loads of ex pros that will do it for a fraction of the price , any ideas ?

Alternatively licensed is the term I like.

He was rugged and very strong/tough. He also hit very very hard at a certain level.

He was British and Commonwealth champ and a strong, aggressive, dangerous fighter, a Phil Martin boy. He could take fighters out with one shot.

Ekubia has overestimated his value. He might be worth watching in Manchester or Oldham where he did most of his boxing and people still remember him, I don't think he ever boxed in Nottinghamshire/South Yorkshire/Lincolnshire as a pro - I don't know why he thinks he warrants two and a half grand AND pick his opponent!

He was decent enough but strictly domestic level. He was a bit of an old timer when he was boxing. I wouldn't be surprised if the 'opponent' was fellow old codger Tony Dore/Lance Williams! Anyone remember him?

Well this thread inadvertently answered a question I always didn't know the answer as a kid.

I remember watching Eamonn Loughran's WBO reign on ITV and always remembered he had 1 defeat on his record. I didn't know who it was who beat him. Checking out the record - it was Ekubia.

hes from bolton same as me his son was at my school,
i am not sure where or if he trains when it comes to boxing but he goes to bolton arena gym to keep fit and he does some shadow boxing to warm up, i will tell you what tho he aint half in good nick he still looks in top condition,
i agree that 2500 sounds a lot of money.

I reckon the reason you have thought that is due to most promotors not liking the term "unlicensed" as it sounds like something illegal etc , due to films etc so the only ones who will use that name on their promotions are the people who are a bit shady and want to sound like there a bit of a gangsta , wheras the more respectible promotors will usually call it white collar , the ones who use the name semi pro are basically trying to legitimise the bouts as similar to pro bouts to the paying public , thats my take of it anyway

so if the dodgy types are the ones using the name " unlicensed " then there more likely to do a few mismatches and people taking a deliberate dive etc with dodgy bookies taking bets , thats probably why youve found those named ones a bit more extreme than the ones termed white collar , hope that makes sense

i like to think im a more legitimate promotor on the white collar scene and to be honest would much prefer to be doing it as a pro but finiances dont allow me to , promoting white collar was they way into the sport for me as i can no longer justify fighting myself as a lightweight/superfeather who now weighs in as a cruiser , id get well and truly mullered by some of these big 6ft3 14 stone guys in a ring , something i couldnt take on the chin if it was someone id fancy myself to beat in a streetfight

I remember that fight well.Loughran was getting beat so just stuck the most blatant headbutt i have seen in a ring on Ekubia. It was on Screensport on the great Tuesday night Pro-Box programme,i think.

£2500 ? shit the bed.

These events are always entertaining when you get a game fighter with plenty of family and friends supporting them in either corner. Typically a great little atmosphere and a good time.

This fella sounds like he wants to get paid well, look the bizz against someone had picked by himself (probably his gym pal) and then steal the show.

Unfortunately he's not a name known round these parts so adds no value in terms of attracting people - and that approach goes against the spirit of the show and breaks the bank.

Seriously, would Tim Witherspoon box for £800 ?

think it was a bit cheaper than that even , he only does it generally if his son nis having a pro fight over at the same sort of time , but i know hes come over at other times so must be a case of doing a few shows to cover his flight etc too unless someones willing to pay for that on top .

Im currently speaking to an unbeaten ex pro about fighting for me , only been inactive around 18 months if that and hes a lot cheaper than these guys and is also known in the area , not known as much as witherspoon like but better valuefor money , hope it comes off well

Has it ever occurred to you that he wants £2500 for it otherwise he wont do it.

He is 50 years old, former British Champ, so you cant blame him for wanting good money.

Who is going to pay it though?

I want a million pounds a week to teach English - It is my right to ask for it but no-one is going to pay it. :TU:

He wants what amounts to a good purse AND pick his opponent? Can you see why no promoter would go along with that?
