Re: Gary Mason killed in road accident
RIP Big fella, always seemed just a really nice guy, not like some of the jumped up wankers around these days.

Re: Obituary - Gary Mason (1962-2011)
Fitting tribute that Ian,
In hindsight his stand against a confident and up for it Lewis was a absolutely terrific one. Lewis was a different fighter in the second half of his career but one could argue that his creativity and tenacity in the early days made him a slightly more formidible, if vulnerable fighter. Mason gave him a really decent battle and only got stopped when the eye got too painful.
I liked him, and my dad swears by him been at least as good as Bruno, as good as a world champ! We could definately do with a young Gary Mason coming through the ranks now.

What a great piece, I really enjoyed that.
We should remember the guy for what he was, not how he left.
I'm sure his funeral will be a who's who of boxing and a testament to his popularity.

Lovely piece, really captured the character of the man.
Re: Obituary - Gary Mason (1962-2011)
It was Gary Mason that got me into filming Boxing, One day we was at the royal oak in Canning Town, and he asked if I could get a Video camera, as he was fighting in Southend on Barry Hearns 1st promotion, I think it was Sam Scaff, and they dont have TV, so it was Gary that put me on this road, I think Mark Reefer Boxed as well, We have been mates ever since, I last spoke to him in November to come over to the O2 , but he was busy, Gonna miss him, God Bless you Gary, R I P

I saw Gary mason once at the Notting Hill Carnival; he was one of the biggest, most solid looking men I have ever seen. Gary was a very powerful and surprisingly fast boxer. He showed he had real knackers as well when he was up against it, he weren't a front runner. RIP Mr Gary Mason, taken before your time.

Actually mate, that reminds me - he was quicker than he looked, hand speed too. Only beaten by one of the best.simon fox wrote:I saw Gary mason once at the Notting Hill Carnival; he was one of the biggest, most solid looking men I have ever seen. Excellent article Ian. Gary will be sadly missed by everyone in the industry. He was a true gent in every sense of the word.
