Even so I don't think the Hopkins fight, final of the little middleweight tournament, could have been considered a tune up. The hype around it was pretty big.
Exactly. It was the culmination of a high-profile tourney. There may have been speculation as to what Trinidad would do next if he won, but it was merely talk in the way that there is always speculation about what big names will do next. Trinidad-Hopkins was not a tune-up for anything. It would be like saying Pac-Mosley is Pac's tune-up for Mayweather.
One I can remember, though he was robbed, was Neil Swain against Paul Ingle. Paul was no doubt a top class boxer and they put him in against Swain when he was on the way up, Swain was regarded as a tough journeyman. I can remember the bout and Swain gave Paul hell. He really gave it to him and Ingle hit him right in the knackers, really hard. It's down as a KO win for Ingle but he was really lucky, Swain was into him bad.

I remember it well, except George was not champ at the time. But it would have been a big fight for Garcia nevertheless and remains a great example for the thread.
