Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
Who would have won a match between these two at 140 pounds? I really don't know much about them but from what i've seen on youtube. Its a shame their isn't more video on these two because their records could fascinate anyone. Someone please give me a good detailed match here, or a good breakdown of both fighters
Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
The only boxer that can compare to Locche for pure pugilistic skills -balance, slipping, countering, combinations, the works- is Willie Pep.
He was an untouchable master in the ring.

Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
Enrique, I'd add Whitaker to that list.
I'd go with Locche as well, just too slick. This fight COULD have happened in real time when Loi was well past his prime and Locche well before his prime. Now THAT fight might have just gone Loi's way.

Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
Hate to wimp out, but this is too close to call. Locche a little better on defense, Loi a little better offensively. It is a shame that not more footage is available.
Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
I'll cast the first vote for Loi. Awkward style, tremendous stamina, iron chin (never on the canvas as a pro) and of course his trilogy performance against alltime great Carlos Ortiz. I'm taking Loi by the narrowest of margins, maybe even a split decision.

So far this fight would have been a real technical battle from the sounds of it.

You make a decent (brief) case. I am leaning toward Locche at this point, but Hey Zeus, is it hideously close to call.Seamus wrote:I'll cast the first vote for Loi. One person would definately know....and thats Carlos Ortiz. He fought Locche to a draw, and several years before that fight he fought Loi 3 times, and ended up 1-2 against him. That has to speak for itself about these two. It's frustrating not being able to view more on these 2 all time greats :(

Ortiz is the best Rican fighter ever, IMO.AndreWardFan2006 wrote:One person would definately know....and thats Carlos Ortiz. Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
I would call here a more likely draw. I do however, think that if a decision is made it would go in favor of Loi. Loi is severely under-rated by many.
By the way, I also think Ortiz is the best Puertorican fighter ever closely followed by Wilfredo Gomez.

Barry how about Benitez? Do you think prime for prime Cocoa is better than Benitez? or Montanez?BarryWashington wrote:Agreed. Here are my top five Puertoricans:
1. Carlos Ortiz
2. Wilfredo Gomez
3. Wilfredo Benitez
4. Pedro Montanez
5. Cocoa Kid
Honorable mention to Jose Basora who drew with a prime Robinson and hold wins against LaMotta, Zivic and Holman Williams.
Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
No room for Wilfredo Gomez? Holds the record for consecutive KO/TKO in championship fights. He surely deserves a spot on the top five imo.BarryWashington wrote:

complete chess match that would have been weird to watch. its going the distance that's for sure.
Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
Bumping a topic that was brought up in the "best fighter you never heard of" thread.
Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
Loi would win...
Loi beat Carlos Ortiz twice and Locche couldn't beat Ortiz... Peppermint Fraser beat Locche pretty good... Locche fought with his hands down and certainly was hittable with jabs and straight rights... The secret to beating a guy like that is how Ray Leonard beat undefeated Wilfredo Benitez... He used feints and nailed Benitez with smooth, hard jabs and straights... When he stabbed him good he followed up with flurries of hooks and uppercuts.. He floored him in the 4th and eventually stopped him.
Locche never fought anyone with the skills of Leonard, or he would have been knocked out as well... He racked up 14 draws which is a lot... Carlos Monzon fought in Madison Square Garden and in Europe several times... I don't consider Locche to be the same caliber fighter... 140-pound Champions like Terence Crawford and Mikey Garcia would finish him quickly.

I think what your saying is plausible. And I happen to disagree.

It's not a minority report Burtomer Snoorff---also known as BuzzBox... You forgot to hook up your brain again.
If a guy has no punch and hides out in Argentina fighting 5th raters -- where he's gifted with 14 draws -- he can't be that good... Who did he beat who was on the level of the undefeated Terence Crawford or undefeated Mikey Garcia?? .Nobody... He didn't win titles in 4 weight classes and his record is spotty as Hell
9 out of 10 of Locche's opponents were 2nd raters to 5th raters... In his 80th fight he fought a guy with 1 win in 20 fights.

Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
As a matchmaker I have always been intrigued by this hypothetical bout so I , in fact, asked Carlos Ortiz who was better
Loi or Locche? 'Loi, Loi was a better fighter", he answered, quite unequivocally.
His manager, Billy Daly; a personal friend, answered me , in reference to Locche, "Oh you mean that little guy who ran all around the ring?" He had a unique style that made him very awkward .. but he could not have gotten away withat outside of Argentina"
Of Loi , Daly, commented , "He could fight. His prob;em was that he got his title fight when he was older (30) and he had outgrown the lightweight limit where he was at his best".
George Parnassus, the promoter of Napoles' championship bouts, offered Locche a welterweight title match with Napoles in Los Angles in the early 70's but Locche's handlers - the shrewd , Tito Lectoure, turned it down.
Locche was the greatest attraction in Argentina - bigger than Monzon - and Lectoure crafted his legend of invincibility.
He could draw more with Locche than Monzon and pay him less and not have to share him with the world.
Locche never boxed WBC champion Bruno Arcari, for that matter, either.
Cuco Conde, Napoles manager and another good friend, said that there was talk of Napoles and Locche boxing in Buenos Aires before they were both champs but.."You could never win against Locche in Argentina and Locche could never win anywhere else"
The facts bare him out. of Nicolino's 136 bouts , only three were outside of Argentina. He won the title against Paul Fuji in Japan with on a rare TKO. Fuji had suffered a terrible car accident and not boxed for the title in a year.
The other bouts - versus Peppermint Frazer and the rematch with Antonio Cervantes he, respectively, lost and failed to regain the title.
On the other hand, Loi had won in the US against Del Flanagan and lost a split decision to Ortiz in San Francisco while also winning in Australia and France.
Both boxer's were truly "homers" - who didn't hit many - and Locche the more remarkable performer but most of those whom I've asked - and had experience with both, claimed Loi was the better fighter - not quite "Untouchable" but almost unbeatable.

Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
I agree that Ortiz was the best Puerto Rican fighter ever. However, he wasn't developed on the island but in New York so it's a tough choice as to the the best fighter to be developed there; I'd say Wilfredo Gomez.
Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
If its held in Italy Loi wins. If its held in Argentina Locche wins. Both guys loved home cooked decisions...
Re: Duilio Loi vs. Nicolino Locche
Loi did not beat Ortiz twice. He got two gift decisions (just like Loi got against Perkins). If youd seen those fights youd know it. Ortiz even knocked Loi down for a clean knockdown and the referee didnt even count over Loi. It irritates the shit out of me when people who havent seen these fights talk about them in such certain terms because theyve read one sentence about written in Boxrec by another know-it-all who has never seen these fights...Kalan wrote: ↑09 Mar 2018, 04:04 Loi would win...
