Yeah Wesley was quite good when in the mood, he had all the tools to do more than he did.

I remember his Midland area fights with Antonio Fernandez and he gave Rob McCraken a decent argument when they fought.Old bones Ian wrote:Yeah Wesley was quite good when in the mood, he had all the tools to do more than he did.
Used to see him enjoying a dance and a few brandies in the clubs in Brum.
Re: sparking the prospect
What about the "Billion Dollar Superstar" or whatever he was billed as, Matt Ellis, entering the ring to much fanfare only to be stopped in 5 by Ukrainian import Yuri Yelistratov?
Not only a big upset at the time, but a good example of an eastern European fall guy who actually won.
I think Ellis got his revenge by first round KO in the rematch, but I remember back then thinking there was something dodgy going on there. The Ukrainian just stood and let Ellis batter him before going down and getting counted out

i know it was a morecompetetiv match but i remember ellisgettingstopped by dennis bakhtov at the york hall bethnel green, ellis entered the ring in his usual txedo wit velcr fastenings, hnding out blackpool rock to the crowd during his entry, i remember as he walkedfrom the ring in dejected manner, someone called him afraudand threatened to ram thstick of rock up his arse....ellis just glanced....
Re: sparking the prospect
I'm sure Del Bryan wasn't supposed to beat Javier Castilejo out in spain (Castilejo undefeated at the time and went on to win multiple world titles). It was a points win.... I am struggling to think of one with a dazzling KO that hasn't been included.
Re: sparking the prospect
Does anyone remember a hot super bantam prospect, Mark Bowers I think his name was? Lost to Ervine Blake by stoppage and was never seen again

Re: sparking the prospect
it wasnt a massive shock to me, his brother, i begged him not to fight, begged him! he'd not trained for weeks and was suffering from alot of injuries. before the fight he looked like crap and he told me after that when he walked down to that ring he had nothing to give and we could see that from the opeing rounds, his punches where lifeless. Luke requested to fight valentine on the november 2010 show but valentine was out of the country on work, so instead he fought simon fleck and won with ease. 26th feb 2011 he'll hopefully be fighting him and he'll prove he's a far superior boxer to valentine.mickey1975 wrote:Wasnt there, but Luke Robinson getting ko'd in Leeds the other month was a shock.Nobody who has watched Robinson saw that coming

How about Emanual Augustus stopping Thaxton?
Re: sparking the prospect
We got a lad in brum Andy "Paddy" Patterson hed lost 6 of his first 7 with a draw or soething like that .was brought in for local ticket seller Danny Gell (sold about 140) got hammered in the first round that we were seriously thinking of pulling him out went out in the second and clobbered him three times for ko win.
Few more points losses hes brought in down crawley for Nicky Jenman gets outboxed for 3 rounds last round we tell him to stop leading an wait to throw a shot (he was being countered silly by a former good am) first solid shot he lands he gets another ko win.
Same lad brought on to a hatton bill to fight one o there prospects Joe Collins tough fight but too experianced for the lad he gets pulled out by his corner before last round.
Pat has also came in against hometown guys Kieth Sheen and Matt doyle and got hard fought draws,
Interesting in 19 pro fights hes never fought anybody with a losing record and hes fought 15 against guys with no losses to there name (some were debuts to be fair)
When he got two wins on trot amd a draw we had two pullouts and the phone stopped ringing and people wonder why some of the more experianced journymen dont always look like they are putting it all in .

I noticed he hadnt had a fight since and to be fair kid must have been gutted he had a lot of fans there and was only a few punches from getting a stoppage win in the first if Patt wasnt so tough we wouldnt have sent him out for the secondmickey1975 wrote:He retired Danny Gell!jonp wrote:We got a lad in brum Andy "Paddy" Patterson hed lost 6 of his first 7 with a draw or soething like that .was brought in for local ticket seller Danny Gell (sold about 140) got hammered in the first round that we were seriously thinking of pulling him out went out in the second and clobbered him three times for ko win.

Re: sparking the prospect
There were a few prospects who had their bubbles burst by Eastern European imports - Glen Catley, Jason Matthews & Mat Ellis.
Ajif Djelti also did some damage on these shores.

Ross Hale (15-0 at the time) getting his jaw broken by Andreas Panayi.
The Cypriot was a mate of my Auld Fella, too, which made 9-year-old me, watching on telly at home, jump all around the living room like a loony.

Panayi was a hard nut in the ring, I saw him beat seven shades out of Shaun Cogan at ringside. Great little scrap that.SweetLikeSugar wrote:Ross Hale (15-0 at the time) getting his jaw broken by Andreas Panayi.

Aye, he was that. Re: sparking the prospect
I remember Andreas Panayi fighting Sammy Fuentes, the Puerto Rico was seen by some as damaged good, as his recent form had been hit and miss. but the one thing that Fuentes has was world class power, Panayi did well in the first couple of rounds keeping Fuentes on the ropes, then in the 3rd the power started to show, and Fuentes suddenly exploded in the 4th with some huge hooks to KO Panayi.
That was the start of a great run by Sammy Fuentes who went on the win the WBO title.
