That's a bit harsh, mate. The bloke won't have done it on purpose and I'm sure he will have nightmares as a result. To "hope" he does is out of order. Push bikes on the road are accidents waiting to happen, cyclists are so vulnerable it is unreal and at 0615 (i.e. in the dark), they are at even greater risk.

Totally agree, i've managed to run over two kids whilst driving. The collisions were pretty minor and down to them running (or cycling) in front of my car on a busy main road but it was utterly heartbreaking hurting them- dread to think what this chap is going through
x2 - I run over a young boy on a bike (no more than 6). Completely his fault and it was in a 60 mph zone and I wasn't going more than 40 or I would have killed him. He went through the windscreen smashed it, landed on my lap and then onto the road. Amazingly he suffered NO injuries - taken to hospital but discharged on arrival.... I know, cause their family tried to take action against me (even though it was deemed his fault by the Police).... family tried to claim that he would never be able to play football proffesionally (he was 6 and my own little investigation showed it was bullshit, there was no injury).

However, every day I still have that vision of him on my lap.... and my first reaction was "oh my god, I've killed him" - even though it wasn't my fault.

I completely agree with the above posts, ive also run a pedestrian over and again it was their fault, at dark with no visable colours. unfortunatly the guy I ran over suffered a badly broken leg and other injuries.

Stu that sounds horrendous the little girls father had let her out on an adults bike with no breaks. I sent her a card and some presents while she was in hospital asking the family to get back to me and let me know she was ok. They never did- my nasty side would gladly kick his C*nt in.

Yeah - they were visiting Pembrokeshire and staying at a carivan park they were all on bikes. Grandad was front, grandson was middle and grandmum on end. The turned into to the caravan park (which is situated on an A road) without any signal. I thought they were just driving straight so I passed them.

It was a rainy day. I jammed on the breaks - and grandad actually squeezed passed me. The young boy followed his grandad and wasn't so lucky.

When the boy was on the ground. I was the first person to tend to him (got out the car). Grandad, who was right next to the boy, first response was to phone the Police (not ambulance) and Grandma first response was to phone the boys mother... why? cause she was at the Caravan park and try to fecking claim she witnessed it and witnessed them signalling!. Again, no mention of the ambulance... the Police called the ambulance! Didn't even ask if he was okay, I was the only one talking to him - trying to crack some jokes. He was obviously shaken up, but looked fine. Naturally I was shitting it that he hadn't done some internal damage.

It was touch and go for a while, Police fecking harrassed me... accused me of all sorts (drink etc) - hadn't touched a drop. I was lucky that the car was behind me verified my story and was clear he was big enough vehicle to see over the top of me. If it wasn't for him, I could have possibly lost my licence.

Not that I minded, but naturally they didn't ask how I was coping (the family) just telling the Police that they should throw away the key! They didn't even show any concern for the boy - just wanted me put at blame. Disgusting really.

I called the hospital to say I was an eye witness and concerned about the boy as it was a terrible accident. Hospital told me about the discharge. Oh there is no way I would have found anything from the family.

i cant stand people who race about :!: & drink driver's are scum of the earth.

the driver was reported as wreckless who took gary's life & i have no sympathy :!: gary losing his life has sickend many.
he really was a funny & likeable character. a pal told me he was playing a game of card's in the title sport's shop in bermondsey with the owner's & had his money on the table & a gypsy kid came in swiped it & bolted. gary put up chase even though he had no chance of catching the kid but left the shop in uproar as the seat was stuck to his ar$e    he was allway's reminded of the occasion & found it hysterical.

I recall Gary talking about his career not long after he retired (first time as I recall). He explained that he, Gary, was unusual in that he never really celebrated in the ring after all his wins. Even as he won his thoughts and fears fell to how alone and ignored he may feel once he inevitably lost. It was inspiring to hear him say that he was actually surprised how many real friends were there for him on that one incredibly brave occasion where he did lose, to an all time great.

Thanks for the memories Gary
