That's nice. I liked Glenn, he was a gutsy fighter and he can rest easy in the knowledge that he achieved above and beyond what might have been expected of him. To capture a WBC title is a truly remarkable feat for a British boxer and the KO wins on foreign soil over Lucas and Beyer were outstanding achievements, especially Beyer in Germany.

I agree what Glenn achieved was a truly great achievement. WBC Champ is the real deal! To stop Lucas in the 12th in a final eliminator in Canada and then stop Beyer in the 12th in Germany to win the title, real life Rocky stuff.

I feel Glenn never really got the credit he deserved probably cause he boxed away from home a lot.

Lets hope Scott Dann can follow in his footsteps............we will see.

That's so true, the irony being that boxing away from home should earn you more credit. I also think a big part of it is that he was based in Bristol rather than London or Manchester, so had less opportunities for media exposure.
I remember seeing him and Dean Francis sparring at the old Empire gym. I'm sure they were big mates Jamie, but who did you think tended to come off better in their sparring sessions. I only saw one or two (this would have been back in 1994-5), and Dean looked so classy - I thought he was going all the way.
Also, what's happened to Ross Hale? He provided some great entertainment and as with Glen came across as a really down-to-earth, humble guy.

He did have one bit of luck did Glenn in a career where most of his big fights were fought against the odds. Prior to the Woodhall fight in 1998 Glenn was booked to fight the emerging Howard Eastman in defence of the British middleweight title. Then I think it was Nardiello pulled out against Woodhall at late notice and Catley got the nod losing a questionable verdict that even Richie didn't agree with. Catley was then in the WBC mix at super-middleweight for several years, but had he run into Eastman instead and lost his British title he might never have got that kind of opportunity.

I think what didnt help Glenn Catley's reputation was that just when he was starting to build up momentum as a middleweight, and getting a good bit of sky coverage he lost rather disturbingly to Andras Galfi.

What Glenn went onto achieve was phenominal, but I couldnt help get the sense that as stepped up in class, critics were fearing that he would fall apart and become exposed as he had appeared to do in the Galfi fight.

Dean and Glenn were good mates. When they sparred it was top class to watch, i think Dean Francis probably had the edge in sparring. He was a phenominal talent and Glenn would be the first one to admit that. Its a tragedy what happened to Dean he would have been up there with Calzaghe. Dean lived for me for 2 years when he was on his comeback and for the Barney fight. He had that star quality or x factor and anyone that seen him in the gym knew how classy he was. The way he stopped Starie and Cornelius Carr were top notch. Also sparring in that gym together at that time was Kelly Oliver, Michael Jones, Steve Bendall, Scott Dann, Darren Dorrington it was entertaining to say the least.

I had forgotten about the Eastman situation yes that was fate on our side!

Ross Hale is living comfortable with his own house. He lives with his partner and 2 kids. He works I think he was doing scaffolding. He pops in the gym now and again to say high, still keeps fit.

I think it was fair for critics to be judgemental of Catley after the Galfi fight but he sure did go on to prove them wrong. Like I said real life rocky!

I thought I read somewhere Dean is coming back again as a cruiserweight this year, reckoned he'd found some new treatment for the old shoulder problem. I take it he is no longer in the Bristol gym these days?

Catley was a lot better than people remember, he was jobbed out of the first fight with that fraud Danilo Haussler as well...shocking decision.

Robbed against Woodhall.

Cheated against Thobela. The WBC granted Catley a rematch on the evidence that Thobela's bandages were loaded. Only in boxing!

Robbed against Haussler first time. Given rematch by EBU.

Cheated against Haussler second time. The cut that stopped the fight was made from a Catley punch not a head as was indicated by the ref. They waited until the end of the 4th knowing that it would go to scorecards and that Haussler was in front due to the knockdown in the first. Catley was just coming on strong in the 4th. If they had stopped it before the end of the 4th it would have been a no contest i think. The Haussler corner can actually be heard discussing with the ref at the end of the third that they will pull him out after the 4th!

No it appears not, Haussler was always a bag of shit i was glad when Mads Larsen beat him and then i think Markussen beat him as well, German fighters sometimes don't half get bailed out. Kai Kurzawa is the latest on the conveyor belt, his decision win over Lolenga Mock was corrupt, nothing more nothing less just plain corrupt. And you can fornicating quote me on that to!!

Thanks Jamie. Confirmed what I thought. What surprised me the most with Glen is that I thought he was a natural middleweight, yet all his biggest successes came at super-middle - proves how far sheer guts and willpower can take you.

Yes Glenn was never a natural super middleweight he moved up to take the opportunity to box Woodhall for WBC title at 13 days notice. Glenn was not really in the gym at that time!

Jesus, I never knew he didn't even get to prepare for it properly. I remember watching that fight in a bar in Taunton and I must admit that beforehand I thought Woodhall would have a fairly easy fight on his hands, but Glen completely took away his jab and destroyed any attempt by Woodhall to get into a rhythm. Terrible verdict.

Spoke to Moses today, he is fine. He is currently setting up a new bank account for the project in Kenya then i'll speak to Kev - BB.net to see if we can sort it so people can donate on his website and it transfers straight into the account.

He said he is back running now but not in the gym the jaw still needs another month before he can get back sparring. He was down in the dumps as one of the young girls on the project died last week she was suffering with HIV she was 10 years old.

I will be at the fight, without a cap or tracksuit. :P

It's really not just Plymouth though. Boxing crowds are pretty much the same demographic the country over, or at least the fights I've attended they are. Imagine what it'd be like if you held the fight in Bodmin or St Awfull?
