Researching life and career of Dave Charnley

I've just been given permission to do a biography of Dave Charnley . I hope to focus primarily on his boxing career but it will also include his life outside the ring .
I've been doing some research over the last few months ,and of course his professional record is easy to obtain . Through boxrec I've got brief details of 46 of his amateur fights between 1952-54.
One thing I need to do is go through all the Boxing News editions between 1954 and 1964 ( excluding 1962). If someone could loan me these for a couple of weeks I would be most grateful and I would pay all postage and packaging costs , both ways .
I would appreciate any stories any forum member has . I do intend coming down to the London area in March to carry out face to face interviews . I would be especially interested in hearing from anyone who was a member of the Dartford and District ABC or the Fitzroy Lodge between 1952 -1954 . Also anyone who was around the Thomas A'Becket when Charnley was training .
Dave was a bit concerned that there would not be much interest in a book on himself , given that he fought so long ago . I think there is interest .
Nobody is hoping to make a profit from this project -its simply a challenge for me to fill a gap in British boxing history . I hope I'm up to the task !!

I know a lot of people who would be interested. Dave was one of our best ever boxers and I used to do business with his company years ago. Dave Charnley Estates. Nice man and great fighter. Im 38 but I know a lot of London old timers who would be very interested in the book. Great idea.


You should try to contact Roy Francis who I think knew Dave well. Also, ex pro Billy Secular and Bobby Neill too. Tommy Lovesey of the Civil Service and Westminster ABC followed Dave's career very closely too. Tommy must be well into his 80's now but has all his marbles and is very fit. Still lives in the Victoria area. You should also speak to Terry Downes and contact the London ExBoxers Association and the Home Counties Ex Boxers Association.

I've got a file of contemporary newspaper cuttings on Charnley. You're welcome to come and see that and copy what information you need, but I don't want to let it go.

My dad sparred with Dave Charnley at the Thomas A Becket before his 1st fight with Joe Brown,Charnley hit the old man with a right uppercut and drove his front teeth through his mouthpiece,into his tongue! Wicked puncher by the sounds of it and the old man still talks about it to this day!

Dave was smart, out of the game by 29 with all his money and all his marbles. I'm pretty sure his win over Darkie Hughes is the fastest ever in a British title fight.
