Re: Brian London -vrs-Dick Richardson/EHT/ring riot/(1960)
his brother looked pretty tidy there, was he a fighter too, must have been!
Re: Brian London -vrs-Dick Richardson/EHT/ring riot/(1960)
The infamous "Brawl at Porthcawl."
Re: Dick Richardson-vrs-Brian London/EHT/ring riot/(1960)
at least it was all kept in the ring, unlike the the Bowe, Golata incident.
Re: Dick Richardson-vrs-Brian London/EHT/ring riot/(1960)
It would have been cool tho to have seen Andrew Golata been able to take a few swings at that thug/imbecile who was beating him over the head with that walkie talkie. But at least the a-hole had to buy another walkie talkie afterward.

Did Gran have that one as an Ali loss?
How about Gran Jnr?

Even though
Muhammad Ali was at his peak around 1966-1967.

London had a very healthy (or unhealthy) amount of names on his record, on his day he was a dangerous fighter, others he was cannon fodder but look at the names:
Ali, Patterson, Johannson, Nino Valdes Quarry, Machen, Bugner, Walker, Richardson, Pastrano, Cooper, Folley, Spencer, Henry Clark, McNeeley, Rademacher, Joe Erskine, that's a slew of champions and contenders, and he kept his marbles and did well after he retired.

I'm pretty sure he was in 2 Para with my father in law. Apparently he was a nice fella and a real hard nut.jimglen wrote:his brother looked pretty tidy there, was he a fighter too, must have been!
Re: Brian London Book(?)
Does anyone here have any information concerning a book that was published about 2 years ago about Brian London?
Was it an autobiography,or a biography that Brian London cooperated with the author?

The fight that London had that always intrigued me is his fight with Johansson. He knocked Ing cold in the last round. The bell rang before the 10-count. Ingo got the decison.
At the very least that was a very strange ending.
Also, London claimed that the bell rang early in order to save Johannson.
It's funny that you almost never hear about this fight. Would love to see it; the last round in particular.

Ampling Alp why are you saying this crap??
The last round of that fight are to be found everywhere, I have had it myself for over 25 years.
There is nothing to it. Ingo is knocked down/stumbling down - takes a short count - rises before the bell using a very slack rope that makes it look like he is in trouble, and the bell ends the fight. Ingo won a huge decision.
If Brian claimed victory sometimes then write it of as a drunken journalist stuff or Henry Cooper claiming that Cassius Clay got a five minutes rest after he knocked him down.
Woller

Re: Brian London-British HW Champ 1958-59 thread
As I said I have never seen the fight.
I have always heard that Johannson was still down when the bell rang.
You are saying that Johannson did get up before the bell?
In the book Facing Ali London said" It was a hell of a fight. It was a good fight, but I can't say that I was out in front. Anyway, the last round comes up and I hit him ion the chin and knock him spark out. He was out. And they cut the bell short. Two minutes. I could not defend meself because I had no manger. That's what you want a manager for".
Maybe London is making this up, I don't know. I had not heard that round was supposedly cut short before.
Has anyone else seen this fight?

I too have always heard that Johansson was still out, like cold, when the final bell rang, and that he was saved by the final bell and won the decision.
A Google News Archive search confirms Woller's description. Here's the story: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=nk ... ndon&hl=en

Johansson may not have been technically knocked out in the the last minute of the round,
He was back on his feet when the the ref was still counting, but out of it when the bell rang.
He was barred for a month from the ring after it until a through examination proved he was okay to fight again.
In the meantime he announced his retirement from the ring at age 32.

Re: Brian London-British HW Champ 1958-59 thread
Have you actaully seen the fight? From what I am reading, it sounds like he had not got up when the bell rang, though it's not 100% clear. I have read in several books that he was still down.
For example, in the Boxing Register (3rd Edition p. 395) it says that johannson was "literally saved by the bell".
The Encyclopedia of Boxing" says that Ingo was "apparently out when the final bell rang."
Thanks Brutu and sweet sci for posting those newspaper articles.

No, I haven't seen the film of the fight either.Ambling Alp wrote:Have you actaully seen the fight? From what I am reading, it sounds like he had not got up when the bell rang, though it's not 100% clear. I have read in several books that he was still down.

But neither of those quotes you gave said he was unconcious on the canvas when the bell rang.
However, that the bell rang at 2 minutes is a new one to me.
Sort of sounds like the ending of the Ken Norton vs Scott Ledoux fight
