Rematches that should have happened

Post by Chris W 1982 »

With 2011 throwing up three quality rematches in the space of four weeks (Lawton/Mathews, Rees/Watson and Bellew/McKenzie) what rematches do fans on here should have took place.

Rematches are essential to boxing in the essence that they answer so many questions previously unanswered from the first meeting. They also go a long way to producing quality rivalries.

Mike Gomez v Alex Arthur
Jimmy Vincent v David Barnes
Joe Calzaghe v Robin Reid
Lennox Lewis v Vitali Klitschko
Jamie Moore v Matthew Macklin
Shea Neary v Eamon Magee

at the time a case could have been made for Haye v Thompson..... Simpson v Smith (though i can see that definitely happening after the Lindsay rematch) ,

I know mate. Fond memories of that trip but it was an absolute nightmare.

Went up absolutely convinced that Smith was going to dominate him but I was nervous as hell when them scores were getting read.

The trip home was dominated by converations about Burns/Martinez. Unreal fight, unreal atmosphere.

Weird, I re-watched Gomez/Arthur at the weekend.

How come the rematch with Lear didn't happen? (Gomez called for it in the post-fight interview with Arthur). What happened to Lear?

I remember attending Wayne Elcock Vs Darren McDermott a few years ago, McDermotts big chance for the british title, brum/black country derby, accidental cut in the 2nd gave Elcock the win (and took McDermotts unbeaten record) - definitely should have had a re-match

Should've been a god damn NC, then the rematch HAD to happen. Horrific BBBofC rules.

Paul Samuels vs Darren Barker first outcome was clear cut.

Brodie vs Jorrin 2.

Lewis vs Klitchsko.

Lear retired due to shoulder problems, he had one fight after the Gomez fight and never fought again.

i disagree with gomez as murdering someone dont warrant rematches. & macklin gave it everything & had success till mooresy's strentgh saw him across the finish line.

Gomez/Arthur would have been a fantastic rematch. Although Gomez prevailed, Arthur certainly had his moments.

Yeah, far from one-sided fight. Gomez was hurt numerous times and ended the fight with nose and lip damage, he knew he'd been in a fight. He said himself that Arthur hurt him.

because its over a 4 hour journey nothing to do with the result smith would win the fight no matter wher the fight takes place i had him by 2 last time and that was with a injured hand

i watched the lewis vs klitscko fight last night - what were the reasons lewis gave for not having a rematch???? i knew he retired but for 6 rounds it was an excellent fight and both would have made massive £££ for the rematch

How about Henry Cooper-Joe Bugner is still argued that it is a robbery even though the fight happened 40 years.
