Do any of you guys know if Jefferies appeared on any live TV being interviewed back in the 50's when TV was basically getting its foothold ?. I would think that if he lived in Burbank, he would have appeared on any early TV, possibly "This is Your Life" or something like that.
Obviously there is movie footage of him,but most of everything I saw was silent.

Charlie . . . Jeffries passed in 1954. If he was on any TV production I'm unaware of it. A few years before his death, his wife was killed walking across the street from the couple's Burbank home to his barn where he trained boxers and staged amateur boxing. The loss was hard on the former champ.CNorkusJr wrote:Do any of you guys know if Jefferies appeared on any live TV being interviewed back in the 50's when TV was basically getting its foothold ?. When will the madness end??
Sergio Martinez Named WBC "Emeritus Champion"
Official WBC Statement: The WBC is proud to announce the appointment of Sergio Martinez as Emeritus Champion. Sergio Martinez is a two-time world champion, as he conquered the WBC super welterweight championship and then defeated great champion Kelly Pavlik to conquer the WBC middleweight championship. He then defeated Paul Williams with a dramatic “Knockout of the Year.” Sergio Martinez is a true example for the youth outside the ring and is constantly active in the WBC Cares Program, visiting children’s hospitals, underprivileged children’s housing, and has a formal company in support of abused women making him a true influence all around the world. With Sergio Martinez’ designation as Emeritus Champion and Ambassador of Good Will and Peace, WBC interim champion Sebastian Zbik of Germany becomes the WBC world middleweight champion and must face the mandatory contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

My mistake: Jeffries died in 1953, not '54 as I posted.
His barn was disassembled and moved to Knotts Berry Farm in 1954.

Remy, during the filming of Rocky at the Main Street Gym in 1976, Mel and I ate lunch with Burgess Meredith. He was a very nice guy, fairly talkative and full of questions for Mel. He was picking Mels brain the whole time they were talking. Over the course of the filming at the gym, I believe it was three days, they continued to talk. I've heard stories that Mickey was patterned after Howie Steindler. I've never heard anything put out about that on any official articles written about Burgess Meredith on his character Mickey. It may or may not be true.Panzerfaust wrote:Yo Rick!

I do however, see a lot of Mel in Mickey, maybe it's just a coincidence. The scene where two girls approach Rocky as he is hitting the heavy bag was hilarious. I was standing next to Mel when the scene was being played. As the girls open the doors to enter the gym Mel was talking to himself and had a scowl on his face. When Mickey chased the girls out of the gym Mel had a smug look of satisfaction on his face. They did this scene a few times and every time they did Mel reacted the same way. It was too funny. To use Mel's vernacular, Mel hated "them f*cking broads!"
I honestly believe Meredith, at least in part, absorbed some of Mel's personality and character in to Mickey but that's just speculation on my part.

I was disappointed to learn this. I called Don and he said that he had too many other inductees this year and had to remove somebody. He said there's a chance he may be dropping some who do not respond to their notification, and if that happens Fritzie Zivic might be back in. We discussed Fritzie's California background and he said that Zivic certainly qualifies and if he drops anybody Fritzie will be put in this year, otherwise next year for sure. Don said he'll let me know in a couple of weeks. I let him know that I had to inform Brian, as he had planned to come out to accept the award for Zivic.

Randy . . . Like you, I spent a lot of time around Howie at the gym, however, aside from him having a gruff exterior with good heart, I never saw anything in Mickey's charactor that reflected Howie. However, Mel & Mickey could have been brothers. For one thing, during the twelve years I trained at Main Street Gym, I never saw Howie train a boxer. He ran the gym and managed fighters, but I never saw him teaching or conditioning a boxer. I know how a great actor will pick up on mannerisms of those they choose to mold their charactors after. Mel's mannerisms were very obvious in Mickey's charactor. Randy, you unknowingly were likely a part of the moments that contributed Meredith's great performance.

Just got in from Ring 8 meeting tonite. Teddy Atlas on hand to talk about what he feels could be corrected in boxing and getting future youths into the game. Mentioned how ESPN chastised him on calling the Alphabet's Belts organizations crooks. He tells it like it is and too bad if he steps on toes. Nice speech. He also talked about his days with Michael Moorer and how some trainers need to be more of a "psychologist" than a trainer, and his tip of the cap to Cus D'amato back in the day.. Good Stuff there also.
Found out the John Duddy/Andy Lee Fight on March 12 will not be in The Garden, but rather Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Slated for HBO that night. No news on the Irish Card in Garden yet, maybe there wont be this year.
