Ike Quartey vs Jose Luiz Lopez????
I never saw this fight but wanted someone to tell me there opinion on this fight and the verdict. this was Quartey's fight right before he faced De La Hoya. This fight ended in a draw but Lopez knocked quartey down I saw twice. Was Lopez one of those heavy hitterrs who didnt know how to box cause after that i never heard of him. he didnt even get a rematch with quartey. Did quartey outbox him?? Could Lopez have give de la hoya or trinidad a good fight considering he drew quartey???.
re
Lopez was one of those wild swinging, care-free living Mexican's kind of like Olivares, but not quite as skilled and not on the same level as "Rockabye" Ruben. He was a viscous puncher and he could box well enough, he just enjoyed to party a little too much. He went on to win a WBO title, I think and he is fighting today after a lay off of a couple of years, at super middleweight I think now. At the time, he could have given anyone in the welter division a tough go and it seemed that no one really wanted anything to do with him except Quartey. The bout itself as I remember, I believe Lopez may have had an edge, but it was a good fight.

Jose Luis Lopez was a tall- nearly 5'11"- power punching young man, a third generation boxer. Unfortunately for his career- but great for DLH< Trinidad, etal- he was/is a mental case, preferring surfing and "mother nature" to training. He KO'd Eammon Loughran in @ one minute, floored and TKO'd Yori Campos, and he stayed upright against Trinidad, and won a UD over Aaron Davis hurting him in every round despite being outweighed by 15lbs. Against Quartey he ate jabs like popcorn and hurt Ike with every punch he landed. All ten of 'em. He fought the same against James Page, losing a decision in which he floored his man three times. He retired for a while, returned last Oct at 171 and has fought 5 times, winning the IBA MW Cont---sometitle- along the way. Weighed 159 last time out.

i'll add.
I believe Lopez is the only man to drop Yory Boy Campas. not sure about if anyone else has, but Lopez sure did.
Lopez had fought Vaca earlier that year, and his eye was swelled so bad, he was lucky not to have the fight stopped on a TKO for his opponent. Whether that had him slow down and try to cover up more vs Quartey I don't know. He covered up a lot vs Quartey instead of brawling. If he would have brawled he would have taken Ike out in that fight.

Lopez was one of my favorite fighters when he was active and a true contender. He could punch really well and gave everyone fits because he was so strong. I also thought Quartey won the fight and if I remember correctly there was a delay as the fight was announced for Quartey and later changed. Lopez problem was that he was a dope smoker, a very laidback bohemian spirit who surfed at Baja and backpacked across Europe. He carried this laidback attitude into the ring and often fell behind in fights that were very winnable. He could have beaten Quartey and he could have destroyed James Page but he never turned up the intensity. His knocking down Quartey was the signal that DLH was waiting for to challenge Quartey as NOBODY wanted any part of Bazooka before that. At his best he was great to watch, at his worst (which was pretty darn good) he was frustrating, making fights much harder than they had to be.
