I'm also surprised! :o

Wasn't he scheduled to fight someone recently? It might just be my imagination.

Edit: Yeah, Andy Lee. It's still on Boxrec.

Wasn't world championship material.

Decent enough fighter, decent following and still could have made a bit of money with fights with Andy Lee etc..

Strange one, but best of luck to him.

Sad really. He seems to have completely lost his passion and love for the sport.

He was on the end of a severe hiding from Chavez Jr last time out. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Weird.

Shame, good fight in the making against Andy Lee. Oh well, never quite fulfilled his potential, but good fighter.

Real shame. I was looking forward to the fight with Andy Lee. Duddy always gave his all in the ring and while he had limitations, he was/is a decent fighter.

Fine time to retire, just when he's about to meet his fellow irishman in a fight thats been a long time comming. Obviously he did'nt fancy the job IMO.

If its not in his heart anymore then he's right to retire, but his timing stinks to high heaven!

In a way I think it's commendable to the man - refusing his biggest payday of $100,000. There are many boxers in the same position as Duddy who would take this fight and others just for the cheque at the end of it. He probably thought when he signed the Lee fight and got back into training that his heart would turn but obviously not.

At the best it's sounding very fishy.

You dont walk away from $100,000 pay day when your the level of fighter that John Duddy was.

I know he had rumoured retina problem after campas (according to some sources) and was out of ring almost 9 months between Andy Lee and his last fight, so will have plenty of recovery time to chill out and get his mind right.

I'd like to see Andy Lee vs Darren Barker for the European title instead.
