there was a rumour two months ago and I was surprised that the Lee fight was made. But there you go. A great warrior, vastly underrated by those envious of his unfathomable popularity.

Good luck Duddy!

un·fath·om·a·ble (n-f-m-bl)
adj.
1. Difficult or impossible to understand; incomprehensible:

Your mangling of the English language aside, fair play to Duddy. I think in contrast to what you were trying to say, most people rated him about right - incredibly gutsy and game, but limited in the context of his aspirations towards world-class. To walk away from a pay-day like that actually takes courage and honesty so full respect.
Where does this leave Lee though?

That's actually a really good call - they both need to put themselves on the radar again properly and while I'd favour Lee, it'd be a competitive match-up and far better than Lee's recent bouts.

The fight they are trying to make instead is with Craig McEwan thats according to Dibella anyway, The only form guide between the 2 is Brian Vera, Vera beat Lee controversially where as McEwan out pointed Vera. This is a more difficult fight that Duddy if you ask me but nothing has been done yet and this is just all pure speculation.

I don't think I am mangling my English thank you very much. He had the support that most world champions would be envious of, he tapped into a market that others have tried and failed to do. Sure he was a good looking, amiable, humble working class lad but so are others from Ireland that have tried to crack America and come home without the bacon. There was something intangible about it that simply isn't so easy to recreate - hence the reason it was unfathomable. Andy Lee is a really nice guy, camera friendly, intelligent and humble, based in New York but Duddy's support wont automatically transfer to him, why?

Duddy was a sales phenomenon, hence the reason promoters were always happy to steer him into an opportunity for a crack at the world title - he fell at the final hurdle on a number of occasions, which personally for me was disappointing. He was always on the verge of boiling down to LMW but never quite had the desire or ability to do so, and missed out on a relatively soft crack at a world title against Verno Philips at LMW when the promotional side blew up with the McLaughlin Brothers. That was the closest he would have come to winning a genuine world title and at the time I think he would have won the fight.

Many dismissed him as a hypejob and a bum, but the reality was the no one hyped him, his fans realised his limitations but also were aware of his capabilities. But he was a lot beat than many of his detractors gave him credit for.

Ireland's John Duddy announced his retirement from boxing earlier this week, admitting that he is no longer in love with the sport.
The 31-year-old Derry man was scheduled to meet Limerick's Andy Lee in a lucrative all-Ireland showdown in the States in March, but Duddy, who traded on fitness and desire, said training had become "a chore" as he walked away from what would have been the biggest fight of his career.
Duddy was once desperately close to a world middleweight title shot at Kelly Pavlik, only to suffer terrible cuts against Canada's unheralded Walid Smichet in Madison Square Garden in February 2008. He came through on a 10-round decision but the cuts required 25 stitches. Pavlik pounded on Gary Lockett instead in June 2008 in Atlantic City.
Based in New York, Duddy could whack a bit and enjoyed a tear-up but he was too easy to hit, which made him all the more exciting. He generated huge interest among the Irish fraternity in New York every time he fought but the Smichet wobble was soon followed by his first defeat to Billy Lyell in April 2009, on a split decision, and he was comprehensively outscored by Julio Cesar Chavez Junior last summer in San Antonio, in what turned out to be his last fight.
At 29-2 (18), Duddy's best wins came over Howard Eastman, Prince Arron and Yory Campas, and he was 26-0 when he lost to Lyell. Ultimately, the charismatic Irishman who was never stopped gave it everything and just came up short.

That sums up Duddy perfectly for me.

How he stood up for the 12 rounds against Chavez Jr is beyond me. He was very tough, but just lacked that cutting edge at the higher level.

In truth he was never really hurt in that fight. He was comprehensively beaten but never hurt, in fact Duddy probably landed the best shot of the fight.
