Andy Lee v Craig McEwan views

Post by ALI »

Now that Duddy has pulled out of his fight with Lee, apparently Scotland's Craig McEwan is the front runner to replace him in an all celtic showdown.

Its a good match up IMO, with Lee probably being the favourite going in. I'm not ready to make a call yet, but i will say i see this going the distance.

How do you see this one going?

Two Celts, Andy Lee and Craig McEwan, could face off in the States on March 12 after Lee's original opponent, John Duddy, suddenly and surprisingly announced his retirement.
Southpaw Lee, big and strong but slow and open, is on a decent run since he was destroyed by the unlikely Brian Vera three years ago in Connecticut, having won his last nine contests (five early). The Limerick man may have scared off Duddy, who clearly doesn't fancy it for one reason or another, which makes you wonder if the Derry battler is badly advised, one punch short of a combination, or just Irish. Duddy stood a puncher's chance against someone like Lee, particularly in the early rounds of an all-Ireland showdown set to make them a lot of dough in Connecticut in St Patrick's week.
As for southpaw McEwan, big and strong but slow and open himself, he outscored that man Vera over 10 rounds in 2009 in Texas so has one over Lee, although neither fighter can really fight. Lee, 24-1 (18), is trained by Manny Steward who keeps telling him he's looking great when in reality he's looking great against body bags, while McEwan, 19-0 (10), also looks great against corpses and supposedly has Freddie Roach in his corner but "Red" can't spare the time with the tall, pale-looking Scot, prompting a McEwan tantrum quite recently and a career that seems to be going nowhere. McEwan, 28, fought just twice last year.
As for the result, both men men bust up and I'll mention that in case of a cuts ending, but McEwan has shown a little bit more of nothing than Lee down the years and I lean towards him.

Although I don't see any world titles in either future saying that neither guy can really fight is plain daft mate.

Did you not get your coffee this morning?

Thats quite a brutal take, just because neither of them are particularly looking like making a big splash on the world title scene does not mean they deserve a good ribbing because of it. Both guys have their own qualities and are good fighters in their own right, and dare i say it, still with a lot of room for improvement.

Did not know McEwan wiss pee'd of due to Roach not having time for him. He'd be better off else where if thats the case. I had my concerns that he was being used a bit as a sparring partner for top names, because he has a reputation as being a right tough nut he seemed to be getting the call up for sparring with just about everybody who was anybody, and taking some uneccessary punishment along the way IMO.

I for one hope the Lee v McEwan fight comes off. I'll be looking forward to it if it does.

very harsh words.
Lee to me hseems to have teh tools and he should beat mcewan easier than he would potentially have beaten duddy.
mcewan however seems to haev faceed tougher opposition buit doesnnt seems to have enuogh tools to my eys to beat lee.

OK, I'll bite.
If you get stopped after seven rounds (premaurely in the view of many) and were ahead on points at the time, that means you were "destroyed"? :oo
Come on bennie, you're better than that.

I really havn't seen a lot of McEwan, must book a date with Youtube later. From looking at his record he has struggled a bit recently. I know it matters for little in the pro's but hasn't Lee beaten McEwan at least once in the amateurs?

Interesting, does anyone have any info on this. If they did fight, how did it pan out, who won and how? What age were they at the time etc?

Two Scots made it to the finals of the Four Nations, with James Ancliff losing 38-17 to Nick MacDonald (Eng) in the 54kg category and Craig McEwan losing 17-6 to Andy Lee of Ireland at 75kg.

Thats right before they turned pro then so it carries weight with me. Its a wide enough score to suggest Lee outboxed him soundly enough. He'll be more confident going in. Interesting find.

I've just watched McEwan's fight against Vera and to be honest I wasn't impressed. His jab was non existent and his defense was poor, I also noticed he leaves himself extremely open when getting that left hook in. Lee's fast hands and snappy jab beats him all night in my opinion. Up until the 7th round Lee actually boxed much better against Vera than McEwan did.

I like this match. Similiar builds, styles, amateur pedigree, level of opposition, etc. Two good fighters who will fall short at the top level, but still possess some ability. I lean towards Lee. I think he is a bit more polished and clearly punches harder.
