Prescott keen on Khan

Post by johnswan1 »

This would be a very sellable fight for Sky - if Khan and his team fancied it....

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528, ... 30,00.html

Breidis Prescott wants another crack at Amir Khan.

The hard-hitting Colombian famously inflicted the WBA light-welterweight's only professional defeat in 25 fights with that stunning 54-second knockout in September 2008.

And with Khan on the hunt for a new opponent for his return to a British ring in April, Prescottsays he is more than happy to give him the chance for revenge.

"Amir, I remain ready, willing and able to give you a rematch," he said.

"I won't price myself out of the fight. You'll have no trouble selling it to TV. Stop this running and do what the fans want you to do and what your legacy as a great fighter demands that you do: fight me."

Khan is free to choose his opponent after coming through a blockbusting mandatory against Marcos Maidana on his Las Vegas debut in December.

European light-welterweight champion Paul McCloskey has been mooted as has all-action Aussie Michael Katsidis, who is no stranger to success on these shores having stopped Kevin Mitchell and Graham Earl as a lightweight.

Katsidis has nothing scheduled following a trademark humdinger with Juan Manuel Marquez in November in which he had the Mexican down in the third before being stopped in the ninth.

Prescott, who has lost twice - including being out-boxed by Mitchell - since battering Khan is now campaigning at 140lbs himself and is ranked 12th by the WBA.

And he believes the same thing would happen if he were to get a second showdown with the boy from Bolton.

"What does it tell you that he'd go around me, the man who beat him, to instead face a much lighter hitting and unknown fighter he thinks he can beat?" he said.

"Obviously Amir Khan and his team realise I would knock him out if we fought again."

Less than 12 months after Khan was knocked out by Prescott, he was world champion while Prescott was losing to Miguel Vazquez.

Their careers have gone in opposite directions, but I agree this would be a seller and if I were Khan I'd be screaming for this match to avenge the only defeat on his record, a la Lennox Lewis.

I think it'd sell more on PPV than the McCloskey fight will, and it'll be easier to hype to the general public as well.

Apart from knocking out the current belt holder just over a year ago? In this day and age that makes a far better case than many defences...

That may be the case but since Amir got bombed out by Prescott one has improved and the other has not. It would not be much of a contest now. Khan is near the very top of the tree. I can well understand Breidis wanting a crack; if it came off I hope he gets well paid.

That's as may be but I'd still rather see it than McCloskey/Peterson/other relative unknown. Prescott has been at 140 for his last couple of fights so the weight shouldn't be an issue and Khan will be able to lay to rest the ghost of his past. Easy sell.

I think this is a good option for Khan, and by beating Prescott this time around may dispel any demons he still harbours from that devastating loss.

he's had 2 fights at 140 against 2 journeyman opponents.

and one of those was only a decision win.

if prescott beats someone half decent from the wba rankings then give him a shot.

until then he's blackballed. :OhYes:

Apparently Torrecampo has been calling out Pacquiao.

wouldn't even describe fagan as that.

certainly a tier or two up from the 2 that prescott has just fought.

He will KO Khan again. Hits to hard and Khan is still wide open for those looping shots you dont see.

Prescott has Khans number.

I beleive Prescott's height, reach and power will always give Khan problems.
On a lesser scale he could be Willie Pep's Sandy Sadler.

It would be easy to sell but really Prescott is nowhere near world class and doesn't deserve a Title shot, if it were to happen I would see Khan pick him off, fighting like Mitchell but faster and beating Prescott far more convincenally shutting him out and totally showing him up!

Easier said than done. If this is really a stay busy fight, why not fight Prescott and avenge the loss? I'm hoping that HBO and Sky put their collective foot down.

Would you really rather see him face McCloskey?

Well that Vazquez has gone on to win a world title....id like him to fight Prescott again just to erase the defeat&i think Khan would beat him fairly easy...

I'd love to see this fight and I think khan owes it to himself to avenge that demon, presscott might just have his number but i'd think and hope khan would beat him this time, definately interests me more than mcclosky and Peterson although I must admit I'd rather katsidas but I doubt khan's after a tough tough fight straight after maidana and just before brad/alex winner so that probably rules out presscott aswell actually.

No I'd prefer him to fight either Petersen or Ortiz who've proven themselves at world level or near world level.

if the physically frail light hitting mitchell could easily keep at bay and outbox prescott than khan will as well.......my big concern with khan and no matter what roach may think......he still hasnt ironed out khans inability to pace himself in a fight.....right now he is 24....but watch the maidana fight....khan was like a jack in the box track athlete he moved so much and so unneccesarily....he almost still has that amateur type 3 rounds style.....thats what cos him against prescott the first time.....his running in like a dog.......id like to see khan learn to relax more. his speed is suited to a high octane style but in the long run he needs to gain more composure.....ironically the malignaggi fight was the one fight he showed it most recently imo.

Ultimately they will not be looking for an opponent of the highest class for Khans next fight as it is likely to fall in between Maidana and the winner of Alexander/Bradley. For that reason I think the Prescott fight is a good one to keep him ticking over. Yes, he should be able to box rings around him - but that's what they thought last time.
