British & Irish fighters currently rated by The Ring

Post by johnswan1 »

Ten fighters currently ranked as a top 10 fighter in their division. How many more can join these before the end of 2011?

DeGale, Andy Murray, Willie Casey, Andy Lee, Kevin Mitchell, Kell Brook & Matthew Hatton must all be contenders. Probably a few more too?

Not Mitchell, and Brook needs to step it up, but a good chance Degale and Groves could break into the SM top 10

I'll be impressed if he quits tennis, becomes a boxer and then becomes a top 10 ranked fighter in the same year

World top ten? Not unless they step up. Some good depth in that devision now. Of course depends if you class the likes of Kessler, Dirrell and Taylor retired or not.

I think Taylor and Kessler probably will so there's no reason why not, both uber-talented and there is room for them at 9/10 if they continue in the same way as 2010

Groves is overrated by a lot here. I would be shocked if he soon found a spot in the top ten by the end of 2011. Everyone in the current top 10 has a much better resume (which is what these rankings are usually based on) and there are several others not in the rankings who have done more. Degale will also need some step ups to get a spot in there. It is only early days and neither has made it past Brit level. In a couple years they (especially Degale) have a good shot of being world ranked, but by the end of 2011? Highly unlikely.

Also, Taylor is not ranked by The Ring.

Don't know what Murray is at. He won the EBU title in March 2009 but has fought eight times since then without really stepping up further.

I also see McCloseky is down as "English" in The Ring.... :oo
That was EU Murray won, not EBU, and he has since relinquished it.

Yes, he was stripped of it for not defending it. Some Spain based Vietnamese guy won it since.
