The best job in boxing

Post by colin russell »

To me the best job in boxing would have to be the guy takeing the photos, no presure as to who won and being there at EVERY fight card. I would think I had died and gone to heaven. Your thoughts please as to your best job in boxing . :bag:

Tough gig, IMO, to make two wound up agro men per fight happy. I reckon the guy looking after the ring girls have it made.

Qld promoter Brian Kirwan got into boxing 'cos of ring card girls

Timekeeping is a shite job. One watches fights, but doesn't really see them 'cos concentration focuses on round & rest period time & knockdown.
I hated doing it, but at times there was no way out of it.

but if u go to bed that night knowing u did the best job you could do theres satisfaction in that.
like the old proverb says "you can please some of the people, some of the time, but you can't please all of the people, all of the time"

its the same as judging mate. when theres two opposing teams, the losing team (and the fans of that team) are often going to be upset with the result, and look for someone to blame.

The late great ring announcer: Ray Connolly felt he had the best job in boxing and remained almost unflappable despite bits of chaos at times. The only time I saw him lose his cool was at a Aussie Joe Bugner bout against an American. Ray asked the crowd to please be upstanding for the playing of the American national anthem.

The crowd rose and out through the speakers blasted "God Save The Queen". Ray was heard yelling into his mike "oh fvck no" as the wrong anthem ground on before the plug was pulled. The crowd laughed and jeered until finally the correct anthem was played. Ray remained agitated and lip readers could see he was continuing to drop the magic word due to the cock-up but this time his mike was switched off.

Referee, hands-down. It has major downsides that come with it obviously, but the feeling of doing a hard fight well or doing a big fight pays for itself over and over and over. Most of the time the ringcard girl could ref some of the fights that occur but it is the hard fights that could turn to crap or when something crops up out of the ordinary that separates the levels of official IMO.
Buffer has a sweet job for sure, but really there is no adrenalin surge for him with what he does.... and I wouldn't fancy having to carry a makeup kit with me EVERYWHERE I go!! :OhYes:
