2011 NY Daily News Golden Gloves (84th Ann.)

Post by NYAmateur90 »

The much celebrated Daily News Golden Gloves tournament starts next Thursday...haven't seen any threads created for it or it being too heavily discussed so I decided to make one.

Wanted to stir up some discussion for the Gloves...anyone have any predictions for the tournament?

I'll post the schedule...

I think the 141 & 152 Open Divisions will have the best bouts this year as they usually seem to do.

Please feel free to discuss...

"Don't forget 141 is gonna be good also. Btw when does the novice fighters start fighting"

O yeah I think 141 will have the best matchups...

Not sure when Novice fighters start fighting...I've heard 152 and 165 Open are opening night and 141 Open is going on the Saturday card in Hillburn, NY...

"can we still get in if we are a 152 lb novice female fighter- or are we too late"

Can't confirm but I highly doubt it...to fight in the Gloves you MUST have a physical...and physicals ended earlier this week...maybe if you have some connections...I can't really say though.

Lotta good fighters in 141 Open...good to see Patrick Day, Bryan O'Connor, Carlos Teron get shine in today's NY Daily News article. All three won on Saturday.

I'd be shocked if it wasn't one of them to win the Gloves...Teron just barely lost to Shemuel Pagan in the Finals last year, and Day (in my opinion) won the novice final last year at 141...

O'Connor is good too but he isn't gonna beat either of the other two or any other top guys unless he can fight for all 3 rounds(stamina)...

I said it before but 141 and 152 Open will probably have the best fights(as I've heard usually do)...

I heard Javier Baez (World Class BC) who was in the 132 Novice Final last year lost yesterday(must have moved up to 141).

Should be a lotta good fights on tap...

Didn't see the fight but I heard he gave his opponent (Wesley Ferrer) a tough fight... in the Daily News article, Wesley says that was his toughest fight....

Found an article with the full results from Saturday's card...

Saturday January 22 Results
115 Thorne Valley Road, Hillburn NY 10901
Jose DeLaRosa, Universal BC, d. Javier Baez, World Class BC, RSC 2:04 of 3rd round.
Mikkel LesPierre, Gleason’s Gym, dec. Gregory Thuesday, NYPD Fighting Finest.
Bryan O’Connor, Main Street BC, dec. Daniel Burnam, Gleason’s Gym.
Carlos Teron, Atlas Cops N Kids, d. Roberto Juarez, Sadam Ali BC, by retirement after the 2nd round.
Wesley Ferrer, Brotherhood BC, dec. Ryan Taylor, Aaron Davis BC.
Vladimir Pierre, World Wide BC, dec. Patrick Day, Freeport, PAL.
Nickey Glenford, New Legend BC, dec. Paul Lee Rembert, Suffolk PAL.

152-pound Novice class
Steven Mandolfo, Church Street BC, dec. Hector Ortiz, Mendez BC.
Frank Castillo, Elmcor BC, d. Ronnie Koss, White Plains Youth Bureau, RSC, 1:10 of 1st round.
Eduardo Valle, New Legend BC, dec. Ian Winchell, New Breed BC.
Cerone Washington, Newburgh BC, dec. Peter Bello, White Plains Youth Bureau.

The bolded is an error. Patrick Day defeated Vladimir Pierre...suprised they could make a mistake like that.

Lotta names at 141...Patrick Day won the Metros, Teron made it to the Finals in the Gloves last yr, O'Connor won the Gloves some years back, Wesley won the Gloves before as well(132)...

Is Sosa not doing the gloves?

Good question, he must not be...with his resume he would have probably had an article talking about him before the tournament started. Only him and Marcus Browne(178-0) are ranked by USA Boxing in New York...

Sosa might just do the Trials and go pro...he's earned a spot by winning the PAL's...

the 132lb open weight class, is going to surprise lots of people, you have three great fighters in Louis Cruz a golden glove winner last year and Marcos Suarez also a golden glove winner last year & Marcus Browne another golden glove winner last year. I see Louis Cruz winning it all, going to be tough though.

I'm pretty sure Cristino is fighting in the Gloves...he was 141 Open in the Metros...he beat Marlon Brown in the Metros then lost...

Christian Chavez trains with me, he took a break from boxing for other reasons but he's back in the gym now...I think this is his last year of eligibility for the JO's...

Marcus Browne fights at 178 not 132

But yea Cruz is a good fighter and so is Suarez...suprised they would have Cruz and Suarez go 132(they're from the same gym)...

There's other good fighters at 132 such as Angel Garcia and Domonique James...anything can happen

yea Suarez and Cruz fighting in the same class doesn't really make alot of sense because Suarez and Cruz are the best fighters in that class and they have the same coach (Suarez' Dad)
