Looking for a Manchester Boxing Gym

Post by Atom Bomb »

Hi guys,
First, just thought I'd mention what a great site this is. Always coming back to read stuff on it and the forums have some real interesting debates. :box:
Second, hope this is the right section to post in.

So anyway, what made me decide to post here was that I'm soon to be moving to manchester (from Dewsbury :TU: ) for university. I've done karate since I was 11 (now 18) and I've had a fair bit of competetive experience in the past (I'm not a fan of rating people by belts but I do have my first dan. Also done little bits of other stuff but nothing too serious.

I've recently found a love for boxing after a brief taste of sparring Gary Sykes last summer, I won't go into it as it'll turn into a fairly long life story. At the moment I can't get to any boxing gyms because of college timings and distance, but I do go to a normal gym local to me that used to run boxing (Dicky's). Mark over there helps me out when he's got time too.

IMO I've got a decent base from the karate to build on.

I'd love to compete at an amatuer level and definitely want to take it up to the pro game one day.

So anyway, I'm looking for a decent gym around manchester city centre area, don't mind if its a bit out as long as I know that I'll get the support I need. Suggestions please

Happy to take any advice from people too - actually I'd like it.

Cheers

if just want to hit bags, do circuits, stay fit and learn some basics then the Mancunian Boxing Club. If want higher quality sparring and more detailed training then the Murry Camp in Urmston, South Manchester is very good, there are also clubs at Salford Lads Club and one in Irlam run by ex pro Garry Booth, have heard they are both good but haven't been to either of the last 2.

Sale West is a gym near me. Always has a decent reputation. I think Hatton used to train there back in the day!

Hi Atom,

Have a look at www.astleyvip.com which is about 20 minutes down the A580 from Manchester , they train 6.000 - 8.00pm on Mon/Weds/Fri.

May suit you.

Hello mate,

I used to do a bit of training at the Phil Martin Centre (champs camp) in Moss Side Manchester. Not sure how familiar with Manchester you are but it's just 5 minutes off the curry mile.

Highly recommend it, trainer there was Maurice Core, who trained Naz for a bit if I remember correctly.

I go to the St Annes BC in Chorlton, south Manchester once a week - feckin runs the socks off ya for two hours. Not much in the way of one-on-one coaching but for fitness and bag work its the best £3 money can buy

Hi Adam, if you're coming to study, one of the closest (and best) pro/am mixed clubs is NORTHSIDE ABC in Clayton. Joe Pennington is among the trainers, top man, top club, top facilities, easy to get to, 10 mins from city centre.

hEH Mike , the fellow you mention Joe Pennington , just curious what age would he be , I went to st annes juniour school with a fellow called Pennington who lived around the Clayton area , he had a couple of brothers , twins if i remember right one was a painter .

Not really that important , just a bit off nostalgia really , i now live 12,000 miles away and its always good to remember the old younger days

Hi mate,

Joe must be approaching 50 now but still as fit as the proverbial butcher's dog!

Has a great set-up at the gym and a fantastic team around him.

Many thanks guys, got a few PM's too. Chances are I'll be staying over at halls by the city centre so Northside ABC seems like the top one based on location. I'll definitely be checking other clubs out though, hoping for the best.

What does it take to transfer from amatuer to pro?

Mine are bigger :OhYes:

Do you have to have a specific number of amatuer bouts? Win/Loss%?

I'm all excited, I turn 19 in June..alot of my mates are saying I'll fail badly and it's too late - what do they know... :shame:
