That's right mate. I really hate doing fighters down but Gethin - always fit and game - really fell on his feet that night. Fewkes was absolutely knackered and Gethin still took quite a while to get rid.

Always enjoyed watching Fewkes box - he was a joy to watch. One of my favourite domestic boxers of the last ten years.

Shame he fell out of love with the game but he has done the right thing getting out if his heart isn't in it: a boxing ring is no place for a fighter who is not 100% commited.

bit unfair on Gethin that imo, he was coming off a terrific victory over Nadeem Siddique who was in decent form, dont get me wrong on his day fewkes wouldve probably beaten Gethin.

Yep Gethin was on a good run and good form at the time, so can't take that away from him, Fewkes head was all wrong though.

I agree; Fewkes was an excellent boxer but once he weren't that bothered about training very hard he was up against it. A boxer with a big dig can hide behind the punch and maybe get through easier. Fewkes' style was very effective but he needed to be very fit to keep it up. I enjoyed watching him box and he seemed to be a really likeable and level headed kid. Gethin was on fire though that night; if Martin had not been so very determined John may have fiddled through. Got to give Gethin his due; he grabbed his chance and fought his heart out (+ Martin Gethin is a very decent and capable boxer).

I hope John's retirement from boxing is happy, he did provide good entertainment.

Gethin is still the English title holder (he won it again against Dezzie Higginson last year), but has a back operation due that has kept him out for a while

Should be back out spring/summer time and is chasing the likes of Rees or Watson

Shame, I'd liked to have seen a Fewkes v Gavin fight. Not that I think Fewkes was on his level but could have been a nice style mix with two

Very talented, in hindsight he should of been moved along quicker. Maybe that would of kept his love of the game going.

And losing to Fewkes was probably the making of Craig Watson, he seemed a more dertermined boxer after that loss.

It does seem a shame the John Fewkes has retired without reaching his full potential but I'm sure that it isn't a decision he has took lightly.

John and Glyn Rhodes were kind enough to give up some of their time when they came into my school and did an assembly about Boxing against bullying. They were an absolute smash hit with the kids who still talk about it 3 or 4 years on! Absolute class act, both of them.

I can always remember John saying that he would make an even better trainer than he was a fighter so I hope he comes back to the sport one day after he has had time to reflect on his next move.

Whatever he decides I wish him all the best for the future.

Fewkes performance against Gethin had nothing to do with his 'head'. He was so drained from trying to make weight that he collapsed trying to get out of the car at the venue for the weigh in and basically had to be held up on the scales. He was f**ked.

For the few minutes his legs worked, he won every second against Gethin then the inevitable happened. And even when he was absolutely gone, it still took Gethin a little while to capitalise because of his limited skills.

Gethin was (and will be again, hopefully) a very fit, game boxer. He doesn't have many skills but makes the most of what he has. Good luck to him.

By whom? The Board? As far as they were concerned, he made the weight and had more than 24 hours to recover - and anyway the team did a half decent job of covering up how f**ked he was.
