Job description
The Olympic & Paralympic News Service (OPNS) is the official ‘news agency’ of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in London. OPNS comes under the umbrella of the Press Operations department.
OPNS is responsible for researching and producing thousands of written reports for dissemination to the world’s media and other accredited people. All of this information goes out on an information system known as Info+.
The OPNS Sports Information Specialist (SIS) will be the sport-specific expert on the reporting team. There will be at least one Sports Information Specialist for each of the 36 Olympic disciplines, and the 21 Paralympic disciplines.
Responsible for producing news stories, along with a pre-determined set of reports including previews, reviews and other outputs, the SIS will also brief and mentor a team of paid and volunteer reporters on venue.
They will work closely with their line manager, the OPNS Team Leader, to ensure that the copy submitted from their sport to the Central Editorial Team is timely, consistent and accurate.
This role will last for approximately six weeks (Olympic Games only) or 10 weeks (Olympic Games and Paralympic Games) and will involve long hours, with evening and weekend working a requirement for all applicants.
Because of the nature of the work, Sports Information Specialists will be expected to be on duty from before the start of play at their venue until the final report has been filed after the close of play. It can be a demanding schedule.
In addition to their specific duties, the successful candidates will be expected to assist where necessary in all aspects of OPNS training, planning and administration during London 2012.
