Alexander Povetkin turns pro on Saturday night in UK

Post by Chopping Right »

Any of the serious amateur boxing fans here have an opinion on Povetkin's chances as a pro? Power, skills, chin? As he seems to have won everything going in his amateur career so I am expecting great things.

Actually he didn't pro this Saturday, his debut seems to have moved to Kempten in Germany the following weekend (June 11th). Seems to an odd choice of location for a Sports Network promoted fighter but there you go. Still interested to hear any opinion on his potential from amateur tournament followers.

Maybe Eurosport will show the fight at some point.

Probably they will actually with Hoffmann v Sprott at the top of the bill. I suppose that's why Povetkin is on the card, with Sports Network already sending Sprotty.

Actually it now transpires Povetkin has signed professional terms with Sauerland and will fight out of Germany, which probably makes more sense for a Russian. There are 2 other former successful amateurs on the card as well, Sinan Samil Sam (Worlds gold 1999, beat Audley Harrison on the way) and Paulo Vidoz (Olympic bronze 2000, lost to Audley Harrison in semi-final). Both are a little limited in skills but are strong enough to fight at EBU level professionally.

Povetkin won by TKO in the 2nd round of his debut this weekend. It looks funny to see that he beat Muhammed Ali.

Also Sam beat Okhello by UD... and Vidoz beat Timo Hoffman by SD.

Bizarrely I think he won his Olympic gold with a walkover against an Egyptian called Mohammed Aly...
