Losers
Losers
Boxing is the hardest sport and often losers get overlooked but they should have their day too. Are there any fighters who you felt bad for when they lost a fight? And/or are there any who lost but covered themselves in glory.
On the first count I remember feeling sad for the following...
Hearns (versus both Leonard I and Hagler)
Cowdell (versus Nelson, all that training and then the fight is over before it's begun)
Frazier (Foreman I and Ali III)
On the second count even though Leonard lost to Duran he proved that he had the heart to be a great.
Anybody got any losers they'd like to remember.

I actually felt sorry for Thompson during his ringwalk to the ring for the Eubank rematch. I remember the crowd were booing him and you could see it was getting to Thompson and upsetting him.J-C wrote:I felt sorry for Eubank after the Thompson fights
Carl Thompson has also struck me as a real nice guy and one hell of a brave and gutsy fighter. But that night the crowd were only interested in their sentemental favourite Eubank, the fighter they used to love to hate, when he was winning!

...i thought i posted this...but i must have screwed up some way..
...i felt sorry for ezzard charles every time he lost....especially when he had to fight so far past his prime...and lost to fighters who woujldn't have given him a good gym workout when he still had it.
i felt sorry for walcott when he lost to marciano.
i felt sorry for every fighter who lost to marciano.....all those bruises from being hit low, after the bell and when they were down....and not expecting it.
welcome to the forum....and for using the name of myu favorite all -time fighter.

Thnaks Jaclem... I'm surprised that Charles doesn't appear higher in people's p4p top 10. If you look at the people on his record it is mightily impressive: Burley, Moore, Marshall, Walcott and many more. He gave Marciano his hardest fight. There's been a lot of fanfare about Jones and Toney winning the heavyweight title, but they've won a belt with initials on it from a lacklustre paper champion.
I sure did'nt, Ali used Spinks so he would be able to regain the crown a record 3rd time. He avoided Norton like the plague at this time in his career choosing Neon Leon so he could loose with grace (no knockout), and then be able to return a short while later and beat him in the return match, because he figured that Leon was no threat.wsbuf wrote:I felt bad when Ali lost to Spinks. Was glad while it was happening, but sad afterward.
cheers M.O.

I felt bad for every fighter facing marciano too, because most of there bones in their body were probably shattered from marciano's punches.
I usually feel more bad for guys that come on the wrong end of the decision.
heres some fights:
I felt bad for Oscar against Tito. They took it away from oscar. That mentally hurt oscar the rest of his career.
I felt bad for micheal moorer because he was fighting incredibly then got caught by the grill man, and its embarrasing for him cause he lost to aa 45 year old man.
i felt bad for roy jones against glen johnson because that signified the end of a legacy.
I felt bad for joe louis against Marciano because it ended Louis's career but it did signify the rise and fall of two greatest heavyweight champions
I felt bad for Jersey Joe walcott. in both louis fights, The first he knocked louis down twice and outboxed him but lost the fight. the 2nd he knocked him down again and was leading on points before he tried to slug it out with louis and u can do that with even an aging joe and louis knocked him out with a combo of punches. Walcott then when on to get himself geared for the fight of his life and fought brilliantly against marciano before losing the title in one punch. THe guy gave louis and marciano hell, knocked ezzard charles out cold and no one gives hi mthe respect he deserves.
I felt bad for Tyson obvisely when everynone that cared about him died and corrupt peopel took him over and ruined him. i felt bad especially against douglas. U coudld tell something waswrong by the way he looked against douglas physically, he didnt look as strong and was flabby around the midsection.
I felt bad for Ali against Holmes
I felt bad for Leonard against Norris
I felt bad for paret against griffith

I felt bad for Mosley when he fought Wright.
For Holmes when his almost record breaking win streak was ended in a controversial match with Mike Spinks.
For Bowe when his nutsack was used as a speed bag by Golota.......................twice.
For Golota and his damn uncontrollable self.
Tyson when he bit Holyfield, Holyfield when he got bit.

I felt bad the day I saw Jerry Quarry on some TV talk show maybe a year or two before he passed away. He was like one of the kids at a camp for retarded children I volunteered at one summer ... seemingly happy, but his brain was gone.
But I don't consider him a loser. Dude fought a regular who's who in the golden age of the HW division and won a number of those fights. I was genuinely saddened when I heard he had passed away.

Yes Quarry was class.kingpawn wrote:I felt bad the day I saw Jerry Quarry on some TV talk show maybe a year or two before he passed away. He was like one of the kids at a camp for retarded children I volunteered at one summer ... seemingly happy, but his brain was gone.

On a simular note I was gutted when I heard that Jimmy Young had passed away earlier this year.
It was also sad to hear how such a fine and skilled fighter had been spending his last few years. By all accounts Jimmy was a great guy, very sad.
Felt a little bad for Wepner in the Ali fight. Wepner was gutty, but he had no business fighting for the title. Also, that knockdown he scored on Ali should not have been scored a knockdown. I remember the original TV broadcast when I was 10 years old, which is different than the one that's always on ESPN Classic, and a replay of the knockdown clearly showed Wepner stepped on Ali's foot.
