Post by ohioboxer »

Does anyone think the silver gloves nationals. Will get canceled or postponed. Due to the severe winter storm?

I seriously doubt it. I'm hoping the weather holds up. I could see maybe extending registration until late in the night Wednesday. But as long as Independence weather is manageable, I think it will be contested. May be shorthanded, but I think the expense of boxers/official who are traveling and taking off from work is too much to cancel or postpone. I don't think it would be fair to cancel that because of weather in other parts of the country. Again if weather in Missouri is the problem I think that's different but a foot of snow is something they should be equipt for, I hope. We did get stuck there because of bad weather in our area last year. I'm going to stay positive and say that everyone will be able to make it out and compete.

They are supposed to get it MOnday and Tuesday right now. There is not advisory for Wed at the airport there. We are getting it also today/tomorrow in our area. Sounds like anyone leaving from Chicago may want to head there early before they get the two feet they are due. I had to change my flight because we were goign through Chicago. It sounds like there is goign to be just as many battles getting the the tourny as there will be at the tourny.

Ray Rogers said no way they will cancel. It's on as planned. It will be tough for some people to get there but it looks like the airport is ready and has many resources and a solid plan to stay open. It's going to be making sure you can get out of your airports. I'm praying that everyone who is supposed to makes it there safe.

So we planned for the weather and headed down here early and have been here for 3 days and drove 12 hours to get here. We have family that flew in this is extremely disappointing. We can even try to go home until Thursday, and family flies out Sunday. A week in kansas City with nothing to do. And the expense of this trip is gonna hurt if we have to do this again.

I know some people who were there also. Just a bad deal for a lot of people. Sorry to hear this. Whenever the new date is announced, I hope that I can make it back too. But if not, I hope they still allow those able to make it to compete. I think that is better than the alternative of not having it at all, not allowing boxers who have competed through locals and regionals to get to the nationals (some for the last time), and not having a Nationals Silver Gloves Team at the upcoming National Junior Olympics. I just think that due to this weather, some people are going to get hit hard and some people are going to get hit harder. I think that the thinking is this is better for the safety of all the people coming in. Having all of those boxers/coaches/families in town during this weather would just be too dangerous. Also, if they had the tournament and there were people that couldn't make it (Chicago, other parts of the midwest) that would have been unfortunate too. Like I said, I think that no matter what the decision was people were going to be affected big time by the weather.

Well when you have this many people coming, with plans set, to a National Event and this storm was forecast to be the largest to hit Kansas City in 40 years, you would think they would make the call a week early. If I had enough time to see what the weather was going to be and change my flight plans and hotel arrangements to beat the weather in, Then powers that be, had enough time to make the call on the cancellation more than a day before the start of the tournament. The signs were there of what we were getting the states been salting and clearing roadways since Monday and the local area businesses and schools announced closures on Monday for Wednesday. There has to a be a point of no return on something like this, I understand canceling it due to the weather, I'm just pissed they didn't do it 3 days ago. My families out over 2000.00 and I had to tell my son we cant afford to make it back down to the next one. All preventable if they would have canceled this on Monday.

I called this am to cancel my flight with Delta (which I was supposed to fly out today), and they told me they would wave the change fee, if I can give them a new date by 2/8/11. Hope they give us a date by then! Thankfully, I am out of nothing as long as they give us a new date by 2/8.

My prediction is that you won't know by 2/8. Use the tickets for something else - a trip to the National Golden Gloves or a family vacation. Something new for most boxing people. Another option is try to get that date extended. The airlines are going to cancel flights so they had better work with people in your situation as well.

We were upset also that we got the call about postponing the tournament just as we were loading our van and getting ready to travel to Missouri from South Texas. We had called Ray Rodgers on Monday and he assured us there was no way it was going to be canceled. Actually, his unexact words were that in the 20 or so years he had been involved in this, they had never had to cancel or postpone a tournament before. Why didn't they make the decision on Monday, before we went and rented a van? Unlike some people, we are not out that much and I feel for those who are. The frustrating thing is, we keep checking daily and still no date has been set. Don't know about the rest of y'all out there, but my son is kind of struggling to maintain his weight; I mean, he's had to maintain it for 3 months now! I was hoping they would just postpone it for 1 week, but I keep checking Ringside.com and it doesn't look good. Ugh

They are going to run into all sorts of conflicts now with Regional tournaments for the U.S. Championships and local/regional Golden Gloves tournaments. Granted those tournaments are for senior boxers, but many coaches will have problems now.

Good point about maintaining weight. However, if your boxer wins the National Silver Gloves and wants the automatic entry into the National Junior Olympics, he/she will have to maintain the weight until summer anyway.

How does the whole National Junior Olympic process work anyway? Do boxers HAVE to win the National Silver Gloves tournament to gain entry? Last year, he lost in the Championship match. He advanced again this year and he is hungry...lol. :box:

The 14 or 15 year -champion ( I think age determination for JOs is 15 years-old by Aug. 1st) from the Silver Gloves gets to go to the National JOs as part of the Silver Gloves Team. Otherwise you have to box through your local and regional Junior Olympic tournaments to make it to nationals. Depending on a boxer's birth date, sometimes a boxer can win the Silvers, compete in JOs and then come back for the final year of Silver's competition if they are still 15 years old.

The National JOs are for 15 and 16 year olds. If your 14 year old Silver Gloves champion turns 15 by the age determination date for JOs, he will compete as part of the SG team. Is that more clear? :D
