Khan v Witter 16th April

Post by SteveDow »

Apparently Junior Witter is potentially being considered as an opponent for Khan on 16th April. How do you guys see this going if (in the unlikely event) it does happen.

The logical outcome would be Khan by very easy points win as Witter is clearly past his best and has not fought for 18 months. However, Witter can punch so you never know. Either way, I'm sure this would be much more interesting for the British fans and sell a lot more tickets than some of the names that have been mooted recently.

Good fight.Would be a good sell. As you say, Junior has a punchers chance, but Khan is boxing well at the moment.Would love to see this one.

I hope this isn't true. Witter has done absolutely nothing to deserve this shot and they'll be no pleasure in seeing Khan beating on the shell of what was a world-class fighter.

x2

A piss poor couple of years and 2 defeats in 3 do not make a title contender. Is this the best they can dig up?

I think they are looking at the money it would generate rather than the quality of opponent. Clearly although Witter was never a big ticket seller in his own right, he is a well respected former British world champion who can punch and has good boxing skills. It would be an easy sell to the British public with the inevitable references to Hatton v Witter never having taken place and in a similar way to Haye v Audley (although clearly Witter has more of a chance) Sky could sell this as a 50-50 fight.

It would be even bigger if Witter were to win his come back fight, and proove he has some thing left.

I thought Khan was suppose to be in discussion with Katsidis's Camp?

Funny that Witter was on SKY only last week saying that it was impossible for him to make LWW anymore.

That was my thought - I can't see him being a credible opponent unless Khan is planning to fight at a catchweight.

And if he is going to do that, why not stay at LW where he has all the advantages and fight the next best British opponent? Actually, since that would be Frankie Gavin...

Yeah exactly! He said he physically couldnt make the weight and said he wished he really could considering how good a division LWW is.So khan would be fighting a guy who's not only not fought for ages but a guy who's going to be clearly weight drained!

Mmm. Mixed feelings. Not a great fight on any number of levels. In fact, can't think of much positive to say about it. Except that Witter isn't a lightweight and if we have to 'burn up' one of our fighters in order for Khan and Sky to make Amir's UK 'homecoming' a success, I'd rather it was a veteran at the crossroads than a British fighter with a future ahead of him. Plus, Witter is experienced at world level and can hit. That gives him a shot.

I don't like the idea of Khan coming back to Britain and facing (and probably destroying) one of our up and comers just to help justify his next fight's PPV status. I'm thinking specifically about Murray and McCloskey. I don't believe either stands much chance against Khan at the moment and that it would be a terrible move for either of them to take the fight — for different reasons, but I'd like them to go their own way for the time being, I don't think either is ready or arguably qualified to challenge Khan.

The fact is Khan's next fight will be PPV, no matter who he faces — which is wrong IMO because the quality of the match should count (I have no interest in 'supermarket opening' fights, virtual 'public appearances' by star names). Only Khan and Sky will be the beneficiaries of 'Khan vs TBA, the long-awaited PPV extravaganza'. I don't like such cynical moneymaking exercises, but I have come to accept them as part of the sport. So fine, make your money. But don't damage British boxing in the process by taking a genuine lightweight hope out of his division or a light-welter who, given time, might develop into a decent world level fighter but (IMO) isn't ready yet for someone of Khan's calibre.

Khan won't mind who he faces in April, he's looking ahead to bigger things. To him this is just the next payday (and I don't knock him for that, not one bit). But Sky should be looking to the future and possibly more world title opportunities for UK fighters before the year is out. Getting Murray or McCloskey beat and taking them out of that equation does no one any good. With that in mind, I have no problem with Khan-Witter (which is not the same as saying I would look forward to it).

I tend to agree with Glyn - better this than he obliterates Murray or Mckloskey.

Perhaps it depends on the level of influence HBO have for this 'warm up'. Witter has performed poorly in most of his US TV appearances.

It would do well in Manchester, with Witter the pantomime villain (albeit from a fading memory)

This is a good move by team khan Witter is a good scalp .Two of his last 3 fights have been world titles against the best in the division. He is the most credible of all the opponents that have been suggested.
Witter is in last chance saloon and will put up a fight until Khan imposes himself,he will be too fresh and too fast but the fight will be exciting while it lasts.
This is certainly a fight the British fight fans will want and after Khan wins bring on Ricky Hatton then Kell Brook.
