Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
There aren't many examples of a guy dropping a lot of weight and doing well. RJJ, Tarver, Chris Byrd, Sugar Ray Leonard, ODLH, Anthoney Mundine etc have shown this. Obviously Glenn Johnson has bucked the trend, but you're only talking 5-6 pounds as he often came in around 173 and isn't big anyway. Enzo's punch resistance wasn't great at cruiser and losing 14-16 pounds may not help either.
Whatever he does I Wish him the best as he comes across as a top bloke who no-one has a bad word to say about. A fight against Bellew would be a big seller if he is going to be at domestic level. Anyway best of luck Enzo.

Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
Haye v Harrison reminded me of Haye v Mac. Mac threw nothing of note and as said above backed off with hands down & chin up. He was never world class. He always looked like he could be in better shape and it surprises me that he is now aiming for light heavy at this advanced stage of his career.
Is he being groomed as a scalp for Bomber?

You're right. I was at that fight and in all seriousness they sounded like gun shots when they landed.SteveDow wrote:I thought he was controlling the Frenkel fight until that huge hook which practically knocked him out cold. During the fight I was actually thinking how average Frenkel looked.
You should watch the 2nd round of Haye v Enzo again if you don't think anything of note landed prior to the knock out. He got caught with two absolutely massive shots prior to the punch that had him over.
Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
Macca wasn't miles ahead against Frenkel at all, he'd probably had the better of it but wasn't in complete control.
Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
Scott, I called him delusional because he THINKS that he makes these one-off mistakes, but it's it the guy's makeup. He makes these mistakes tonnes of times in fights and at the higher levels he'll get caught out, which has happened,
Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
I was only querying it in relation to one fight, not the habitual repitition. Not enough happened in it to prove much else, but I think we largely agree and are treading over the same ground now.Dioufy wrote:Scott, I called him delusional because he THINKS that he makes these one-off mistakes, but it's it the guy's makeup. Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
The second one seriously shocked me. It was the hardest punch I've ever heard land on someone at a live event before or since. Ironically I remember thinking Enzo had an awesome chin to have taken it so well!Newport Daz wrote:You're right. Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
Exactly, one-off lapses could go down as 'I made a mistake'. But continual lapses and taking big shots plumb on the chin has to go down to something more like poor technique being punished by better fighters. Which is how boxing works. For me it was just a levels thing with Macc, top entertaining fighter that he was, I never saw him as world level.Dioufy wrote:Scott, I called him delusional because he THINKS that he makes these one-off mistakes, but it's it the guy's makeup. Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
I never said he was mile ahead, I said he was controlling the fight and was certainly ahead on the scorecards. Frenkel wasn't throwing much until that monster shot.Scottrf wrote:Macca wasn't miles ahead against Frenkel at all, he'd probably had the better of it but wasn't in complete control.

Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
all about levels tbh.

Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
The big problem for Enzo is that he simply hasn't made enough money to retire from the game. He has a large family to look after and apart from the Haye fight I can't imagine that he has received large purses given the level of opposition he fought in what is, let's be honest, a very unglamerous division. He probably needs to carry on financially. However, his health is more important and he needs to seriously consider this.
Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
Am unsure about this? Depends what you call enough money, I presume he made maybe £200k+ out of Haye fight, well I would hope so for the size of event. Plus lots of other WBO title fights and his euro level fights. I'm sure he made some tidy purses out of that lot, which if invested well could have set him up pretty nicely. The key being 'if invested well' :)SteveDow wrote:The big problem for Enzo is that he simply hasn't made enough money to retire from the game. Obviously I'm speculating with my comment and may be wrong but with 4 kids and a wife to support I'd deduce from that that he'd struggle to live the sort of life he'd be used to with what he has earned so far.TheCobra wrote:Am unsure about this? Isn't he managing too? Didn't Warren offer him something similar to the Wales branch of his promotions company if he retired, or some sort of partnership?

Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
I agree mate, especially at the end of a career. Also, as mentioned, dropping down in weight isn't going to help his already questionable punch resistance. But whatever he decides I wish him the very best of luck. He seems like a top bloke and at his best he is a very good fighter and hella exciting to watch: a great "value" fighter.Newport Daz wrote:There aren't many examples of a guy dropping a lot of weight and doing well. Quite possibly Scott, although again these type of roles are probably fairly limited in pay and longevity. I think his decision to carry on must be motivated by money.
Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
There a perception that every 'world' champion boxer will make enough money so that he can live in luxury without working for the rest of their life. It simply does not happen in 99% of cases. If the boxer gets enough to buy a house and keep their head above water without falling into debt then they're doing pretty well compared to most people.

i bloody hope so :!: fwank has sense & will want no part in macca continuing. i bet he does look great in the gym etc he's a top lad & his career has been long & decent & his scars have shown & the scared me on a few occasions :!:

I don't care who you are, any fighter who Suffers four KO's in three years, in the same way that Macca has, it HAS to effect them mentally!wadey wrote:May be the move down to Light Heavy will give him a new mindset, as let's be honest those 4 brutal knockouts in the last 3 years must of affected him mentally.

Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
I don't think Enzo Macc probably earned enough to live in luxury. But it depends on the boxer, if they invest their money wisely they can set themselves up, look at Gary Lockett , I hear he got into property with his money and has set himself up nicely and I bet his purses never added up to what Enzo Macc's did.simon fox wrote:There a perception that every 'world' champion boxer will make enough money so that he can live in luxury without working for the rest of their life. The Haye fight alone, I know Haye got £500k+ for this fight, Enzo surely got £200k+, sell out fight at O2 arena shown on multiple TV channels, shown late at night so American TV could have it as well. £200k could buy 2 terraced houses outright somewhere and rent them out. Do that a few times, build up a portfolio and you don't have to work again.
He also fought on many big allegedly cards at various arenas, shows that were on both SKy normal and Sky PPV, can't see he was taking home rubbish money for those fights.
Probably the major issue for a lot of 'better earning' boxers is spending all their money in the good times and not really putting much away for the future.
Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
Don't forget to roughly half any purse figure as they won't get 200k to put in the bank, the taxman will always take substantial wedge.
Re: Will Enzo Maccarinelli Retire
Yep very true and they gota live on the money too, pay their bills , make it last a few months between fights etc. I guess you've got to be very discplined with the money and manage your affairs closely. It is very sad to hear boxers who've made millions for example, going bankrupt at the end of their careers cos they didn't sort out their tax etc.orbtastic wrote:Don't forget to roughly half any purse figure as they won't get 200k to put in the bank, the taxman will always take substantial wedge.

ive watched quite a few of frenkels fights and he's very much a thinker and waits for an opportunity to strike and thats what happened!SteveDow wrote:I thought he was controlling the Frenkel fight until that huge hook which practically knocked him out cold.
