I agree MatthewS; it's like been recognised and acknowledged by someone you look up to; it 'means' more. Them being dismissive or rude toward you; it 'hurts' a bit more.

it is a bit, im not saying its wrong... these are people who by and large do jobs we would love to have, or who have done things we may never get near to doing - fighting for titles, meeting proper legends etc - its natural to voice an opinion to these people and sneakily want to hear '100% mate, couldn't agree more', or at least 'I don't see it that way but thats a good argument you have'... anything rather than being dismissed out of hand, which I think is the particular Rubicon which has been crossed here.simon fox wrote:I agree MatthewS; it's like been recognised and acknowledged by someone you look up to; it 'means' more. Can I play Buttons when this goes on tour? I might get to poke Suzanne Dando or the bird out of Bucks Fizz.

That's because Pat Sheehan makes more mistakes than any other high-profile fistic journalist. I am not saying I could do better, but...... actually, yes I am, I think just about anybody off this site could do a better job than Sheehan.Glyn Leach wrote:That said, you'd stand more chance of reading about one of them in one of Harty's increasingly rare columns than you would from the paper's boxing writer — fact.stujones wrote:Having said this, and I might be wrong, the impression I get is that Hart doesn't necessarily bombared editors with "lets talk about Scott Quigg or Jamie McDonnell".
No matter what mistake Hart may have made, just read a few Sheehan columns and it will soon shrivel into obscurity and irrelevance in comparison.

Steve Bunce is God, as far as I'm concerned, a man who worked his way up from the bottom.

Yes,i remember Darkie Smith saying he used to buy Steve cups of tea when he started out.Actually,Darkie was saying it as he was upset at Bunce calling him a "fat dad" after the Hatton fiasco....bennie wrote:Steve Bunce is God, as far as I'm concerned, a man who worked his way up from the bottom.

Well well I just noticed this thread - very funny to read through this - there is a real roller coaster of emotions
The way I see it is regardless if you are high profile writer, boxer or whoever. If people are abusing or making silly arguments you deserve the right to reply in kind. It is funny to read harden boxing fans throw a hissy fit if Buncey is giving a little bit of bad manners back
FFS, wise up
By the way, Colin Hart was excellent when he was on Sky - I recall him providing the other noddies on the panel with difficult moments when he was speaking the plain, unedited truth about Hatton's chances before the fight with Pacman and his analysis after the KO. I can remember reading Hart's columns in The Sun and often taking unpopular stances when dissing a British fighters chance in a world title fight etc. He strikes me a straight talker and I will always appreciate that quality.
And, although I have to disagree with some of Buncey's opinions - I think he is great for boxing and I love his BBC show on a Thursday night. His Setanta Boxing Hour show was top drawer - brilliant stuff. Buncey and Andy were great and as much as I like Ringside it doesnt hold a torch to the Boxing Hour.
Finally, I have no idea if Ali avoided Foreman - it was before my time and I havent read or watched enough of the old fights (I have a shelf of unread books that I hope to get around to reading). I do think people go overboard with Lennox Lewis though (as great as he was).

I personally don`t give a toss about getting a "reply" from a boxing writer, journalist or boxer.
Putting people on pedastals is one of the reasons why society is more concerned with celebrity/fame, than it is with issues that really matter.
I enjoy the fact that we get posters from all walks of life, with different relations to the sport and long may it continue, but the focus certain posters receive (positive or negative), just because they are a name in the sport, is not right in my book.
Re: Factual error (Colin Hart) in boxing column in Sun online
couldn't agree more. I'd feel like a fcking plum going up to somebody famous, sportsman, actor..whatever. My brother saw Peter Schmeichel on a plane to Denmark a bit back. We idolised him as a kid, me more than him, didn't disturb him though cos he said he probably gets it all the time. I'm the same. I've stood next to Gary Pallister at the bar, another boyhood idol of mine, I'd say hello but he doesn't wanna talk about the 1993 Premier League when he's on a fcking night out does he?forcefraser wrote:This surprises me, we are not school kids.MatthewS wrote:it is a bit, im not saying its wrong... these are people who by and large do jobs we would love to have, or who have done things we may never get near to doing - fighting for titles, meeting proper legends etc - its natural to voice an opinion to these people and sneakily want to hear '100% mate, couldn't agree more', or at least 'I don't see it that way but thats a good argument you have'... anything rather than being dismissed out of hand, which I think is the particular Rubicon which has been crossed here.simon fox wrote:I agree MatthewS; it's like been recognised and acknowledged by someone you look up to; it 'means' more. To be quite honest I'd much rather have a bit of crack on and a photo with a couple of girls off Babestation.

old time writers like colin hart liked to style themselves as the "voice of boxing" simply because they had one of the only voices at that time...... before the internet era where every one has a voice....
steve bunce has a real aura of cu#t about him, and i mean cult not the other word although some of u may think it just as appropriate.....me i dont...but for sure......... there is a whole aura around this "buncey" of nuthugging leg humping weak willed morons who idolise his hysterical rant filled boxing hour which is 2 years dead now and looking dated now anyway.....i never liked his boxing hour, everyone else on it was cramping his style and he never really did put people on who helped him on his way up in the 80s..... i preferred it when he was on his own in the studio with paul dempsey on fight night......the man could talk and hold a show on his own for 4 hours of a live telecast.......but ask me if i think he knows more or has a more qualified opinion than any dozen of regular posters i could name on here than the answer is no......just let the man post on here when he likes.....and treat him the same u would anyone else in which case let him insult other posters the way some of us do each other......

Gasman,
The insult and abuse was aimed at me and I've said already I didn't care or take it personally, so what are you talking about?
The point is, Bunce tried to force home a point and expected us to swallow it because of who he is.
When we, or I, didn't and came back with an alternative argument, he resorted to insults and abuse.
He didn't take us on or have the grace to apologise.
It's done and dusted now, let's all move on, Buncey will be back here plugging his show later, he's already promised us 'ladies' that!
PS I agree with ForceFraser and co. Steve Bunce has done a lot to publicise the sport but he's just a normal bloke at the end of the day, no need for certain posters to disappear up his backside when he mixes with us ordinary folk :)

Agreed on the balls, enthusiasm and not a great writer front, but knowledge and money, no mate, not at all.mugabi wrote:glyn built his magazine with balls knowledge and money and enthusiasm but is he a great writer? Not really no
At the point I was employed by the company that owned and started BM, I was no more knowledgeable than the average hardcore fan of that era, which was pre internet and a lot different than today, with the masses of readily available information in circulation and a far more more knowledgeable fanbase (a fantastic development, in my opinion). It was only once in the job and gaining greater access to boxing figures that I became more knowledgeable than a fan. And I certainly had no journalistic/publishing/anything remotely linked knowledge, nor academic qualifications (four scraper-pass O levels aside), if it comes to that.
And there was no money around, the company that owned BM was in receivership for the second time and with a mountain of debt when myself and my business partner (both employees under the old regimes) picked up the title on tick and blagged our way through the first couple of years, which I spent most of sleeping on the office floor because we were so skint that we could only take a subsistence amount from the company until the debt was cleared and the money began to trickle in.
What I would add to the list of personal attributes you list which enabled me to 'build' BM, just for the record, would be work experience (gained in totally non related areas such as warehouses and a pizza factory, but all surprisingly valid), work ethic, and sheer willpower and determination.
On the latter points — willpower and determination — I think you do Bunce a bit of a disservice by saying anyone could have started out like he did, trying to get copy into newspapers. It's not about 'could', it's about 'would'. It's not so much a career choice as a lifestyle choice, and not everyone is cut out for a life where you're wondering where the next penny will come from for literally years. You have to really want it. And Bunce did — and still does. I respect that.

I know what you're saying. Basically it's okay to be a bit of a slacker, even a bit thick. It doesn't matter if you scrape through school and end up slopping out buckets in a pizza shop or, sweeping up in a warehouse for a few years because there's a lucky break out there waiting for everybody, and you just got keep your eyes peeled and believe it hard enough and one day you will have your dream job.
I think that message will warm the hearts of a lot of people on here. Inspiring

I don't know why you bothered with all that hard work, sacrifice and dedication Glyn, with your voice you could have easily won the X-Factor and become a celebrity almost overnight...
